Corin J Wenger

LCSW (he/him)20 years of experience

I am a clinical social worker with over 20 years of experience working in the field of social work, including case management, psychiatric hospital units, outpatient mental health services, and substance abuse services. I earned my MSW at Hunter College in 2012 in NYC. I have worked with people of all ages, ethnic groups, and political preferences. I have enjoyed working in rural and urban areas of the Bronx, NY, Forks, WA, Seattle WA and now Albany NY. As a transracial adoptee, I appreciate dynamics of the adoption and family experience from different perspectives.

First session

I will ask you some details about what brought you to seek therapy. I might ask some details about your personal life, including your current relationships, work, family history, and ask for some details about symptoms / signs of psychological stress. We will discuss how I can be helpful to you and what you hope for in therapy. I can answer questions of yours if you have any.

Strengths

I am thoughtful, sensitive, curious and empathetic. I enjoy working with people immensely. I am not scared off by complicated situations or people. I view therapy not as a means of curing disorders or returning to “normal” functioning but as a way to learn new ways of experiencing ourselves, our relationships, and the world.

Ideal clients

As a psychotherapist I aspire to be committed and enthusiastic about working with everyone that wants to work with me. If you would like to see what it’s like to work with me, I suggest meeting for a session. We can tell whether I am best positioned to work with you when I meet you. In the first session we will have a discussion of your own goals and you may want to evaluate whether I can be helpful to you in reaching those goals.

Treatment methods

Interpersonal

Therapy is a unique relationship based on your goals. As the therapist, I would focus on attending to your goals with empathy, honesty, curiosity and compassion. This is a dialogue in which I will ask questions of you and accompany you in a journey of self reflection and healing.

Acceptance and commitment (ACT)

Acceptance and commitment therapy advocates for psychological flexibility in the midst of life’s suffering. The general idea is to question assumptions and scripts that we have formed that shape narratives about our lives.

Attachment-based

Attachment is an aspect of human relationships that we all share. We all have experiences that vary from security and thus feeling safe to feeling insecure and therefore preoccupied, anxious, avoidant, or disorganized. As a therapist I use the idea of attachment by trying to understand what your past and present experiences of relationships have taught you to expect and believe about yourself, and how these cycles of interaction affect your well being.

Psychodynamic

Psychodynamic principles of how patterns of the mind that begin from infancy and continue throughout our lives allow us to be reflective and curious about our mental lives. We each have a unique consciousness that has developed over years. To the extent that we can learn about our unconscious, we work to understand our motivations, our desires, our wishes, our assumptions, and vulnerabilities in the context of a therapeutic relationship.

Supportive

I work to support people going through an especially difficult or traumatic time by maintaining psychological safety and stability.
