*Currently accepting clients for Fall 2024 beginning August 12. Hello! I am Dominique Furukawa and I am a licensed clinical social worker practicing virtually in California. I have worked with adults, couples, teens and families. I have walked with clients through journeys involving depression, grief and loss, anxiety, relationship issues, career challenges, addiction, severe trauma, infidelity, physical abuse and emotional abuse. As a former clinical therapist for the Veterans Administration I have extensive experience in the unique needs of active duty, veterans and military families. I have specific interest in working with adults and families in stages of transition as well as survivors of institutional, race-based and spiritual trauma.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

Finding a therapist can feel overwhelming! You deserve a professional, caring environment with someone who will partner with you to achieve YOUR goals. In our first session we will go over some paperwork (kind of boring but necessary!). Then you’ll have the opportunity to tell me what brings you to therapy and ask any questions you may have. If you think it’s a good fit we will create a plan together and get started on the next steps of your healing journey!

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

My therapy style is warm and interactive. I take you and your healing seriously but always create space for joy. Through my work with hundreds of clients I have found that the key difference between therapy that feels good and therapy that transforms is collaboration. I honor your right to self-determination. I use a wide range of trauma-focused, evidence based and somatic modalities to create treatment plans that assist in meeting your stated goals and supporting your specific needs. Specifically, I tend to draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma Resiliency Model (TRM) and Trust Based Relational Interventions (TBRI). I am deeply committed to helping you bring your truest self into the therapeutic process. I gladly integrate spiritual beliefs and practices such as prayer, meditation and sacred texts into our sessions if you desire. Additionally, I welcome those who have experienced race based trauma and clients who are in seasons of deep exploration regarding racial identity formation. All of you is welcome here.

My treatment methods

Acceptance and commitment (ACT)

I help clients explore how holding non judgmental space for thoughts and feelings impact behavior. I help clients learn how their thoughts and feelings can help one make more informed decisions.

Christian Counseling

Faith based supports and resources are utilized when requested by client.

Prolonged Exposure Therapy

I have practiced Prolonged Exposure Therapy with survivors of severe trauma. I utilize this intensive method with clients only when it is clinically safe and appropriate to do so. Clients must have a working knowledge of regulation skills before engaging in this treatment.

Couples Counseling

PLEASE NOTE: I am unable to accommodate Couples Counseling through insurance providers, however I do see couples clients on a sliding scale cash pay basis. Before signing up for couples counseling through this platform please email me to discuss rates. I enjoy working with couples who are interested in working through conflict, growing in communication and learning new skills to work as a team. Please note at this time I am unable to provide both individual and couples counseling to the same persons. However I can help with complimentary referrals if necessary.

Adlerian

I help clients identify the meanings associated with past events, address stuck points and move forward in freedom.
