Hi, I'm JoAnn. A client once said to me "I feel so heavy, everyday, it's like I'm swimming in mud". Many times people feel this way but they don't really know why. Everything is a struggle, even just trying to express a thought or a feeling. It's so hard to feel happy and free or enjoy certain moments when mental/emotional struggles make you feel physically weighed down. Stress, anxiety & depression all have the capacity to make you feel unmotivated and downright exhausted before you even start your day. It's important for you to understand the effects stress, anxiety or depression can have on you not only mentally/emotionally but physically as well. Let me help you work through those struggles so that you can feel free and enjoy life again.
In the first therapy session, you can expect to spend time getting to know me and what brings you in. I will ask some questions about your background, current concerns, and what you hope to work on. It's also a chance for you to ask questions and see if we are a good fit. Together we'll start setting goals and discussing how sessions will work. You don't need to have everything figured out - the first session is simply a starting point to begin the process in a safe, supportive space.
In addition to being a therapist, I used to teach psychology classes so in addition to using CBT with my clients, I love to teach aspects of psychology that will be helpful for my clients to learn and to use as a foundation for treatment.
I work best with people who are ready to make changes in their lives, even if they're not sure where to start. Many of my clients come in feeling stressed, stuck, or unsure of how to care for care for themselves or speak up about what they need. Some struggle with self-doubt, people-pleasing, or carrying the weight of others' expectations.
