Emily Blough
Hi, I’m Emily Blough, a licensed clinical social worker and therapist passionate about helping individuals better understand themselves, navigate life’s challenges, and build healthier relationships. I enjoy working with clients who experience anxiety, trauma, relationship difficulties, emotional overwhelm, or struggles with self-esteem and boundaries.
I enjoy working with clients who experience anxiety, trauma, relationship difficulties, emotional overwhelm, or struggles with self-esteem and boundaries.
My approach is warm, compassionate, and collaborative, creating a safe, judgment-free space where clients feel heard, supported, and empowered to grow.
First session
After a client's first session with me, I want them to feel like they can finally take a breath. I want them to leave feeling heard, understood, and accepted for who they are, without feeling like they need to filter themselves or have everything figured out. My hope is that they feel a little less alone in what they're carrying and a little more hopeful about what's possible. I don't expect anyone to walk out of their first session with all the answers, but I want them to leave knowing they have a space where they can be honest, work through difficult things, and feel supported along the way.
Strengths
I bring warmth, empathy, and authenticity into my sessions, with a genuine desire to understand the person behind the struggle. I want my clients to feel comfortable showing up as they are, without worrying about being judged or having to have everything figured out. I value getting to know each person as an individual, exploring the experiences that have shaped them, and helping them recognize patterns that may be keeping them stuck. My approach balances compassion with practical guidance, creating space for both deeper self-understanding and meaningful change. I believe the therapeutic relationship is an important part of the process, and I strive to create an environment where clients feel heard, supported, and empowered to grow at their own pace.
Ideal clients
My ideal clients are individuals who may look like they have everything together on the outside but feel overwhelmed, stuck, or disconnected from themselves on the inside. I enjoy working with people navigating anxiety, relationship challenges, past experiences, emotional overwhelm, and the desire to build healthier boundaries and a stronger sense of self. Whether you're caught in cycles of overthinking, struggling to understand your emotions, or trying to break patterns that no longer serve you, my goal is to help you make sense of your experiences and feel more confident moving forward. You don't have to be in crisis or have everything figured out to begin therapy; sometimes, you just know you want something to feel different.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I use CBT to help clients recognize the connection between their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Together, we identify unhelpful patterns, challenge limiting beliefs, and develop practical tools to manage anxiety, regulate emotions, and navigate everyday challenges with greater confidence and self-awareness.
Dialectical Behavior (DBT)
I incorporate DBT skills to help clients manage intense emotions, improve distress tolerance, and develop healthier ways to respond to challenging situations. In sessions, we focus on mindfulness, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness to help clients build self-awareness, strengthen boundaries, and navigate relationships with greater confidence.
Acceptance and commitment (ACT)
I incorporate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help clients learn to navigate difficult thoughts and emotions without allowing them to dictate their lives. In sessions, we explore acceptance, mindfulness, and personal values to help clients build psychological flexibility, reduce avoidance, and make choices that align with the person they want to become. My goal is to help clients recognize that they don't have to feel perfectly okay to move forward.
Person-centered (Rogerian)
I use a person-centered approach by creating a warm, nonjudgmental space where clients feel heard, respected, and accepted as they are. I prioritize building a trusting therapeutic relationship, meeting clients where they are, and allowing them to guide the pace and direction of sessions. Through empathy, authenticity, and collaboration, I help clients explore their experiences, recognize their strengths, and develop their own insight and confidence to create meaningful change.
Strength-Based
I use a strengths-based approach to help clients recognize the abilities, resilience, and resources they already possess, even when they feel overwhelmed or stuck. In sessions, we identify past successes, highlight personal strengths, and build on existing coping skills to navigate current challenges. My goal is to help clients shift their focus from what they perceive as weaknesses to their capacity for growth, fostering greater confidence, self-awareness, and empowerment.
