Cara Damier
I’m a warm, respectful, and nonjudgmental therapist who believes therapy should be tailored to the individual. My approach is client-centered and collaborative, drawing from different therapeutic approaches based on your needs. I also understand what it’s like to be a client, which helps shape the care and respect I bring to our work together.
First session
In our first session, we'll begin exploring what brought you to therapy, what you're experiencing, and what you would like to be different. There's no expectation that you have everything figured out or know exactly where to begin. My hope is that you leave feeling heard, more grounded, and with a clearer sense of the path ahead and how we can begin working toward your goals together.
Strengths
I can hold space when you need room to process and gently challenge you when that would be more helpful. I see my role as helping you understand the path you want to take, find compassionate ways to move toward it, recognize when something is pulling you off course, and reassess when the path itself needs to change. I often think of people like different kinds of plants: flourishing doesn’t look the same for everyone. Together, we can identify the conditions that help you grow and thrive in a way that fits who you are.
Ideal clients
My ideal client is someone who wants support navigating difficult experiences and creating meaningful change in their life. You may be struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, relationship or work difficulties, low self-worth, self-criticism, or painful experiences from earlier in life. I also work with college, graduate, and medical students, individuals adjusting to difficult medical diagnoses, and those who simply feel lost or unsure of what comes next. You don't need to have everything figured out before coming to therapy.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I use CBT to help you identify patterns in your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors and understand how they influence one another. Together, we can examine patterns that may be contributing to distress, develop more helpful ways of responding, and practice changes that support your goals.
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
I use emotion-focused approaches to help you better understand what your emotions are communicating rather than simply trying to make uncomfortable feelings disappear. We may explore underlying emotions, unmet needs, and recurring emotional patterns while developing healthier ways of understanding, experiencing, and responding to your feelings.
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
I may help you explore the different "parts" of yourself that show up in different situations. For example, one part may be highly self-critical while another feels hurt, afraid, or overwhelmed. Instead of fighting these parts, we work toward understanding what they are trying to do for you and developing a more compassionate relationship with yourself.
Interpersonal
I use interpersonal approaches to explore how relationships, communication patterns, life transitions, grief, and conflicts with others may be affecting your emotional well-being. We can identify recurring relationship patterns and work on healthier ways of communicating, setting boundaries, connecting with others, and navigating changes in important relationships.
Trauma Informed Care
I prioritize creating a sense of safety and stability before asking you to process difficult experiences. We may work on grounding, coping skills, and strengthening your existing resources first. Throughout therapy, I remain mindful of your comfort, readiness, and boundaries so that we can address painful experiences without unnecessarily overwhelming or re-traumatizing you.
