Maria Slaughter

LCSW (she/her)11 years of experience

I'm a experienced mental health professional with over 10 years of experience in mental health and hospice care. My practice is rooted in clinical expertise, compassionate care, and a deep commitment to helping individuals navigate life's challenges.

I believe meaningful healing begins when people feel safe enough to be seen, heard, and understood.

I provide a welcoming, judgment-free space where clients can feel seen, heard, and supported as they process their experiences, reconnect with themselves, and move toward healing.

First session

Your first therapy session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another and begin understanding what brings you to therapy. During the initial intake assessment, we'll discuss your personal history, current concerns, emotional well-being, and what you hope to gain from therapy. I'll also explain my approach, answer any questions you may have, and work collaboratively with you to begin identifying goals for our time together. There is no expectation to have everything figured out or to share more than you feel comfortable with. This is your space, and we'll move at a pace that feels right for you.

Strengths

What makes my approach unique is the balance of clinical expertise and genuine human connection. I recognize that healing is not a one-size-fits-all experience, so I take an individualized, holistic approach that honors each person's story, experiences, and needs. I strive to create a warm, authentic, and judgment-free environment where clients feel comfortable showing up as they are. My work goes beyond managing symptoms; it's about helping individuals gain deeper self-awareness, navigate life's challenges, build resilience, and reconnect with their inner strengths. I believe meaningful healing begins when people feel safe enough to be seen, heard, and understood.

Ideal clients

Many of the individuals I work with come to therapy feeling overwhelmed, emotionally exhausted, stuck, or uncertain about how to navigate life's challenges. They may be experiencing anxiety, grief, relationship difficulties, life transitions, or struggling to reconnect with themselves. Some simply know they want something to change but aren't sure where to begin. My goal is to help clients feel supported in exploring their experiences, developing healthier perspectives, building effective coping strategies, and gaining the confidence to move forward. Together, we work toward greater self-awareness, emotional well-being, and a deeper sense of balance and fulfillment.

Origin story

I was drawn to this profession by a genuine desire to make a meaningful difference in people's lives. Throughout my experience in mental health and hospice care, I've witnessed the importance of having someone who can offer compassion, understanding, and support during life's most difficult moments. I believe every person deserves a space where they feel heard, valued, and understood without judgment. Being able to walk alongside individuals as they navigate challenges, discover their strength, and find their own path toward healing is what continues to inspire my work.

Ongoing work together

Progress in therapy doesn't always happen overnight, and it may look different for everyone. You may begin to notice that you're responding to challenges differently, managing emotions with greater confidence, setting healthier boundaries, or developing a deeper understanding of yourself. Progress can also look like feeling less overwhelmed, recognizing unhelpful thought patterns, building healthier relationships, and giving yourself more grace along the way. We'll regularly revisit your goals, celebrate meaningful milestones, and make adjustments as needed. My hope is that you begin to recognize not only how much you've grown but also the strength and tools you've developed along the way.

Narrative

I incorporate Narrative Therapy by helping clients explore the stories they have developed about themselves, their experiences, and the world around them. Together, we identify how past experiences, life challenges, and negative beliefs may influence the way they see themselves. I encourage clients to separate themselves from the problems they are facing, recognize their strengths, and begin creating a more empowering narrative. Through reflection, curiosity, and meaningful conversation, clients are supported in reclaiming their voice, recognizing their resilience, and developing a story that more accurately reflects who they are and who they want to become.
