Hello, and welcome to Mental Insight Wellness. I'm Katrina Flanagan, PMHNP-BC, a board-certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner dedicated to providing compassionate, evidence-based care for adolescents and adults. I believe that mental health is an essential part of overall well-being, and my goal is to create a safe, supportive, and judgment-free space where you feel heard, understood, and empowered throughout your treatment journey. I specialize in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of a wide range of mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, ADHD, mood disorders, stress-related concerns, and other emotional and behavioral challenges. Whether you're seeking help for the first time or looking for ongoing support, I take a collaborative and individualized approach to care, tailoring each treatment plan to your unique needs, goals, and lifestyle. At Mental Insight Wellness, I offer both in-person and secure telehealth appointments, making quality psychiatric care accessible and convenient. I am especially passionate about helping adolescents navigate academic, social, and emotional challenges while also supporting adults through life transitions, relationship concerns, workplace stress, and chronic mental health conditions. My commitment is to provide patient-centered care built on trust, respect, and open communication. Together, we will work toward improving your mental health, building resilience, and helping you achieve a healthier, more balanced, and fulfilling life.

First session

Your first appointment is an opportunity for us to get to know each other and begin building a collaborative relationship focused on your mental health and well-being. My goal is to create a comfortable, supportive, and judgment-free environment where you feel safe sharing your concerns at your own pace. During the initial evaluation, we'll discuss what brought you to treatment, your current symptoms, medical and mental health history, medications, family history, lifestyle, and any other factors that may be affecting your emotional well-being. I'll also ask about your goals for treatment so we can develop a personalized plan that aligns with your needs and priorities. If appropriate, we'll review possible diagnoses, discuss treatment options, and determine whether medication, therapy referrals, lifestyle modifications, or a combination of approaches may be most beneficial. I'll take the time to explain my recommendations, answer your questions, and ensure you feel informed and involved in every decision. My approach is collaborative and patient centered. I believe the best outcomes come from working together, and I encourage open communication throughout your care. Whether you're seeking support for anxiety, depression, ADHD, mood changes, stress, or another mental health concern, you can expect to be treated with compassion, respect, and understanding. By the end of your first session, you'll have a clearer understanding of your treatment options and the next steps in your care. My goal is for you to leave feeling heard, supported, and confident that we're working together toward your mental health goals.

Strengths

What sets my approach apart is my commitment to providing compassionate, personalized, and collaborative care. I understand that every individual's experiences, challenges, and goals are unique, so I take the time to truly listen and develop treatment plans tailored to each person's specific needs rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach. I believe that successful mental health treatment is built on trust, open communication, and mutual respect. My goal is to create a safe, supportive, and judgment-free environment where patients feel comfortable discussing their concerns and actively participating in decisions about their care. I take the time to explain diagnoses, treatment options, and the reasoning behind my recommendations so that patients feel informed, empowered, and confident throughout their treatment journey. I use evidence-based practices while considering the whole person—not just their symptoms. This includes understanding how physical health, relationships, work or school, family dynamics, life experiences, and daily stressors influence mental well-being. Together, we develop realistic, achievable goals that support both symptom relief and long-term emotional wellness. I have a special passion for working with adolescents and young adults as they navigate academic pressures, social challenges, identity development, and major life transitions. I also enjoy helping adults manage anxiety, depression, ADHD, mood disorders, and the many stressors that come with balancing work, relationships, and family life. Whether you're seeking support for the first time or continuing your mental health journey, my priority is to provide care that is respectful, individualized, and focused on helping you build resilience, improve your quality of life, and achieve lasting mental wellness. I strive to ensure every patient feels heard, valued, and supported every step of the way.

Ideal clients

My ideal client is someone who is ready to take an active role in improving their mental health and overall well-being. They may be experiencing challenges such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, mood changes, stress, life transitions, or difficulty managing daily responsibilities, and they are seeking support, understanding, and effective strategies for moving forward. The ideal client is open to collaboration, willing to explore their thoughts and experiences, and interested in developing healthier coping skills and habits. They understand that meaningful change takes time and are committed to participating in their care, including practicing skills between sessions and working toward personalized goals. My goal is to partner with clients who are motivated to gain insight, build resilience, improve emotional balance, and create a more fulfilling quality of life.

Treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I incorporate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) principles into my practice by helping clients understand the connection between their thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and overall mental health. Through a collaborative approach, we work together to identify unhelpful thought patterns, explore how those thoughts influence feelings and actions, and develop healthier, more balanced ways of responding to challenges. CBT-informed strategies may include cognitive restructuring, identifying triggers, practicing coping skills, behavioral activation, problem-solving techniques, and setting realistic goals. I may also provide between-session exercises, such as journaling, thought tracking, mood monitoring, or practicing specific skills, to help clients apply what they learn in everyday life. By combining evidence-based CBT techniques with compassionate support, my goal is to help clients build self-awareness, strengthen resilience, improve emotional regulation, and develop practical tools they can continue using beyond our sessions.

Motivational Interviewing

I incorporate Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques into my practice by using a collaborative, patient-centered approach that helps clients explore their goals, values, and readiness for change. Rather than directing or pressuring clients, I focus on building trust, listening with empathy, and helping individuals identify their own reasons for making positive changes. Through open-ended questions, reflective listening, affirmations, and thoughtful exploration of barriers, we work together to strengthen motivation and confidence. Motivational Interviewing is especially helpful when clients feel uncertain about treatment, lifestyle changes, medication decisions, or developing new coping strategies. My goal is to empower clients to make informed choices, recognize their strengths, and take meaningful steps toward improved mental health and overall well-being at a pace that feels realistic and achievable for them.

Psychoeducation

I provide psychoeducation as an important part of my practice by helping clients better understand their mental health, symptoms, diagnoses, and available treatment options. I believe that education empowers clients to become active participants in their care, so I take time to explain conditions, medications, therapeutic approaches, coping strategies, and the connection between thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and overall well-being in a clear and approachable way. I tailor information to each client’s level of understanding, encourage questions, and create space for open discussion so clients feel informed and confident in their treatment decisions. Through psychoeducation, my goal is to reduce stigma, increase self-awareness, improve treatment engagement, and provide clients with practical tools they can use to better manage symptoms and support long-term mental wellness.
