I am Kris Munson and I have a lot of experience as a psychotherapist. I have worked in inpatient and outpatient scenarios as well as community mental health, group homes and private practice. I have been seeing client virtually for many years, but have been exclusively virtual since the start of Covid. Overall I work with a wide variety of issues, such as depression, anxiety, panic attacks, women's issues, anger management, low self-esteem and most other common issues of the current times. I also seek out working with individuals who have chronic health issues, as they have their own elements that need to be considered. I have a laid back, calming style, and provide thoughtful feedback . I enjoy getting to know my clients so I can make personalized suggestions and play to people's strengths. On a personal note I live in the Chicago far west suburbs and have four grown children whom were adopted from Guatemala. We have a number of pets and enjoy road trips when we can make them happen.
In our first session together, here's what you can expect
The first session is more of a getting to know you type session so I can best serve you, and we will discuss pertinent background information. I will ask questions if necessary, but as much as you can lead the discussion the better. I will take my cues from you and formulate suggestion for "homework" for you to work on between sessions. Lastly I will ask you to identify some goals for therapy and identify what you would like to get out of it. There are no right or wrong things to say and we will take things at a pace that is comfortable to you.
The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions
My greatest strength I believe is that I have genuine care and concern for my clients and their individuality. I do not ascribe to a one-size-fits-all or a recipe style approach. I have also been told that I am easy to talk to and many appreciate my feedback as I have a lot of professional and personal experiences to draw from. I feel very fortunate that I love what I do. I target working with persons with chronic health issues as I have a number of them. Type 1 Diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Sjogren's Syndrome are a few. I find it especially helpful in working with others with chronic health issues as it can be a very isolating and frustrating experience, especially for young people. I can provide a unique perspective which helps build a bond and trust.
The clients I'm best positioned to serve
I like working with people with chronic health care issues, particularly auto immune disorders and Type I diabetes. I also enjoy working with women's issues, and believe in empowering them to create the life they want for themselves. Mood disorders and the LGBTQ+ community are other populations I highly enjoy working with. My dream client is ready to commit to therapy and prepared to do the work. They are open to the idea that change is possible, and open to creative ways to work toward solutions.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
Been using since 1995 with individuals of all ages. I take a non-traditional application of the concepts focusing on individual needs.
Eclectic
I have been in the field of psychology since 1989 and have learned many different treatment modalities. I have found using concepts of many is most effective.

Kris is the best therapistI'vehad in 20 years. Challenges me with homework, yet is understanding. She can even follow my meandering trains of thought! Her comprehension of the uniquely strange life of someone chronically ill or living with unique health challenges has been transformative for me. Because she walked that road, she 'gets it' in a way that 99% off people do not. EVERY counselor tells me cry more. Kris has actually helped me GET to crying! It's her genuine kindness mixed w skill.
