Hi! I'm Rebecca! I specialize in anxiety, trauma, and neurodiversity and work exclusively with women and gender expansive individuals. I help clients regain a sense of safety in the world and (re)learn how to trust their own bodies and nervous systems. I also help my clients understand how to work with their brains' unique processing style. Using a trauma-informed approach, I believe in letting my clients set their own pace, whether that looks like jumping right in to the hard work or taking a bit of time to feel comfortable and confident before making big changes or sharing details about the past. My therapeutic style is direct yet kind. I make sure my clients feel heard and respected, but think it's equally important to challenge unhelpful behavioral and thought patterns.

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

In our first session, we'll review your expectations for therapy and make a plan to help you achieve your goals. It's also okay if you to come to counseling without a clear picture of what you want to achieve. If that's the case, we can figure out your goals together. I'll address any questions about the therapy process and then discuss what you hope to gain in our time together. You can feel free to share as much or as little as you would like. What's most important is that you begin to feel comfortable, safe, and understood.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

I treat every client as an individual, taking into account their history, preferences, and unique way of thinking and being. I also reject hierarchical views of therapy, treating the client as the expert in their own life and conceptualization of their lived experience. I also believe in the importance of radical authenticity and treat the therapeutic relationship as a real relationship between humans, built on mutual respect, trust, and honesty. Although the end goal of therapy is always getting clients to a place where they no longer need professional services, long-term counseling is common in cases of severe trauma or complex emotional needs. I have many clients on my caseload who have worked with me for five years or more and several others whom I have served for ten years. This type of long-term professional relationship requires deep trust and commitment, and I am proud to have earned that privilege.  My approach is different from that of many others therapists because it focuses on major, long-term change rather than immediate symptom alleviation. While I always give clients short-term tools to feel better quickly, this is just one small part of therapy. The bigger goal is to get clients to a place where they have addressed the root issues that cause them to feel anxious, depressed, triggered, or cope in unhealthy ways.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

My ideal client is motivated and ready to heal and grow. They may be nervous about starting counseling, but are determined to push through uncomfortable feelings and make positive change. I always enjoy working with clients with diagnosed or suspected ADHD, autism, and trauma. Additionally, I work well with clients who have struggled to understand why they are feeling they way that they do and are seeking answers to complex questions.

My treatment methods

Trauma Informed Care

I focus on the ways trauma affects behavior, relationships, and trust-building. Until a client is able to feel safe, they cannot make progress. My therapeutic process moves at an individualized pace, never faster or slower than what each client needs. It's okay to wait to talk about specific traumatic experiences if you are not ready, but you are likewise able to share everything the first session if you find that helpful. Trauma-informed therapy also involves learning about how your brain works and understanding the "why" behind your emotions and behaviors.

Feminist

I believe that many issues faced by women and gender diverse individuals face stem not from personal shortcomings, but from a system that offers unequal opportunity and is rooted in violence and extraction. Thus, I look at many presenting symptoms through an intersectional feminist lens and encourage my clients to see personal healing and growth as both a personal and political act. Feminist therapy focuses on empowerment, and by asking clients to take responsibilty for only what they're responsible for, not for things outside of their individual control.

Eclectic

Each client is unique so single approach will be effective for everyone. I often integrate approaches from psychodynamic therapy, relational approaches, DBT, somatic therapies, solution-focused therapy, and narrative therapy.
