Hello, My name is Marissa Hancock. I'm going to tell you a little bit about my background as I know choosing a counselor can be daunting. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC). I have an undergraduate degree in psychology from Indiana University and a master's degree in counseling psychology from the University of Louisville. I have served over the years an ethnically and culturally diverse population. I work with all ages in private practice regarding many different concerns anything from: severe mental illness, complex trauma, PTSD, struggling with life changes or direction, family related distress, Parenting and developmental concerns, and couples counseling to name a few. Over the past 10 years I have worked with students (K-12) in a school setting as well, tackling again many different concerns such as: ADHD, Autism, mood disorders, family concerns, bullying, LGBTQ+, depression, anxiety, and more. I practice trauma informed care in everything I do, as my background is in trauma treatment specifically. I am comfortable working with dual-diagnosis or co-occurring disorders. I approach each and every client with dignity and respect. I am easy to talk to always with the goal to create a safe and non-judging environment. I want to meet clients where they are at presently and work at a pace that is comfortable for them towards their desired conclusion or goal(s). I know that trusting a stranger with your biggest struggles is a difficult thing to do. I firmly believe that a good relationship (therapeutic alliance) between the counselor and client is essential for a successful outcome. I work very hard to respect these truths and provide the help that is needed in a very authentic and genuine way.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In our first session we will begin to establish rapport by getting to know each other a little bit and discuss what brought you to counseling. We will cover as much as you feel comfortable discussing in a first session.

What treatment methods and tools do you utilize?

I utilize a lot of Trauma-informed Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). I use worksheets when I feel like it is beneficial. I will request that a client does homework from time to time to aid them in their process. I draw a lot from my experiences and trainings from throughout my career.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I enjoy working with a variety of ages. I have the most experience working with Trauma. I do not have a niche per say as I do work with all ages and with a large variety of stressors/concerns. I am a child psychotherapist and really enjoy working with children and parents. My career has given me a wealth of insight into the developmental patterns of our youth and a unique ability to help. This being said I have worked with adults my entire career as well in my private practice. I believe my biggest strength is that I can make therapy seem like a normal everyday conversation and bring change to those willing to work with me. I do not sit on a high horse or pretend to be perfect. I am 100% authentic in my approach to therapy.
