New to Grow
Hello! I'm a Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW) in Ohio who has been providing therapy for over 7 years with a bachelor and master of social work. I provide individual therapy for adults and have experience working with people from many different backgrounds. Before practicing individual therapy, I worked in a substance use treatment center assisting with a group therapy program. I'm grateful to offer a space to reflect, grow and learn ways to manage difficulties. Finding the time and courage to help yourself isn't always easy... the fact that you are looking for a therapist today means you've already taken a step towards better mental health.
In our first session we will be getting to know each other. I'll ask some questions to get a better understanding of your background and learn what is going on today that brings you to therapy. You do not have to provide details about anything you don't want to discuss. If you have past experience with therapy, I would love to know what worked for you or did not work for you in that experience. It's also a time you can ask questions to get a better understanding of me and the therapy process.
I strive to be open-minded, warm, authentic and non-judgemental. Feeling safe and secure enables therapy to be effective. I'm trained in multiple therapy methods including EMDR, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Motivational Interviewing (among others). My approach is eclectic, and I may interweave several therapy approaches to tailor them for the individual. It is important to me to provide person-centered care and honor the pace you bring to the therapy process.
I work with clients going through life transitions such as adjusting to life after substance use treatment, experiencing a loss, changes in family dynamics. I support individuals who struggle with various mental health concerns including anxiety, depression, trauma, relationships, caregiver stress and women's issues. Therapy is most successful when the client is open to gaining understanding and insight and is able to be consistent with their commitment to therapy.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a type of therapy that uses mindfulness and acceptance to help people handle difficult thoughts and feelings. It teaches you to pay attention to what is happening in the present moment without judging it, rather than getting caught up in or fighting your thoughts and emotions. At the same time, ACT helps you identify what matters most to you and take meaningful actions based on your values, even when uncomfortable thoughts or feelings are present. ACT helps you learn to notice and accept what you're experiencing, stay grounded in the present, and choose actions that move you toward the life you want.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a type of therapy that helps people process and heal from distressing or traumatic experiences. During EMDR, you briefly focus on a difficult memory while also doing something that engages your attention such as tapping your body (imagine drumming on your lap at a moderate pace) or I may use a version of EMDR that has you also spelling or counting as you hold the memory. EMDR helps your brain reprocess upsetting memories so they feel less overwhelming and have less emotional impact in the present.
Person-centered therapy is a type of therapy that focuses on creating a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental environment where you can explore your thoughts and feelings. I'll listen with empathy and acceptance to support you to better understand yourself and find answers.
