New to Grow
My name is Amanda Townsell and I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) who is focused on creating a safe space for clients to explore growth, navigate life transitions, increase distress tolerance, and improve their quality of life. I approach therapy as a collaborative trauma informed experience and want to empower clients to make the changes that they want to make in their life and help increase their support system. I enjoy working with folks who identify as LGBTQ, neurodivergent, who are experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, and who are looking for a calm space to explore emotions and thoughts. Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my two cats, Gizmo and Echo, as well as reading, playing video games, crafting, or thrifting.
During your first session I will ask questions to help determine how I can best support you and to better understand your goals. I like to tailor my approach to be very individual based.
I approach sessions with a quiet and calm approach, but when needed can challenge and often use curiosity to explore things that are showing up as patterns, etc. My approach to therapy is eclectic and pulls from CBT, ACT, CPT, Motivational Interviewing, and DBT. I find that therapy is not a one size fits all approach and that tailoring interventions to a specific client is important. I strive to create a safe place to explore patterns, goals, and increase coping skills. I enjoy feedback about what is or is not working in session to help clients feel empowered in their session. I have worked in a variety of mental health settings and those experiences have shaped who I am as a clinician and how I am able to hold space for clients.
I enjoy working with clients who are thinking about making a change or are ready for a change. I enjoy working alongside someone who is determining what their next steps are or navigating life transitions. I enjoy helping others increase their ability to identify positives about their self and get more cozy with their neurodivergence. I utilize homework when a client wants it and try to incorporate things like gaming, organizational skills, and skill building to assist with achieving goals in ways to make sense for each individual client.
Other specialties
I identify as
Motivational Interviewing
I utilize motivational interviewing to assist folks with identifying strengths, ways to increase their supports, and increase skills to help achieve the goals they want to reach. This approach focuses on skills that you may already have and assists with building out from them to help increase self-esteem, community, and growth.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I use CBT to look at cognitions and where they tend to originate from. Exploration of ways that the past is impacting the present can create space to challenge those thoughts and develop more helpful or supportive cognitions.
Dialectical Behavior (DBT)
I utilize DBT skills to help increase distress tolerance and work on regulation of the nervous system. I want to give clients the tools to increase their ability to regulate intense emotions, and manage relationships and daily stressors. DBT skills can help with safely experiencing emotions without shutting down or utilizing impulsive behaviors.
Cognitive Processing (CPT)
CPT is used to help identify and modify "stuck points" stemming from past trauma and reduce PTSD symptoms. This therapy modality can assist with managing difficult emotions and allow someone to regain control of their life and gain closure to events from the past.
