Are you an adult who has been through a stressful experience? Do you continue to think about that experience, have nightmares about it, or feel as if you are reliving it day after day? Feeling worried, not being able to sleep, and reliving past experiences can be exhausting. If you are ready to regain control of your life, feel more present in the moment, and stop thinking about or reliving that past experience then you have come to the right place. Hi! I’m Sarah Theimer, a licensed professional counselor (LPC) and Certified Clinical Trauma Professional level 2 (CCTP-II) in Virginia. I am also a Christian and the proud wife of a first responder. I provide anxiety and trauma treatment, helping adults breakthrough the cycle of worry and trauma to live a more present and fulfilled life. To help you reach your goals, I use a two-fold approach by teaching you tools to help cope with everyday stressors and manage the intensity of emotions while exploring past experiences which have/are impacting the way you currently feel/behave. As a therapist, I strongly believe in exploring past hurts and experiences to help you better understand what led you to this point and assist in treating the root causes of the anxiety and trauma. I aim to keep sessions goal oriented and structured to assist individuals in meeting their goals. I earned my master’s degree from Lynchburg College in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I have eight years of experience in the mental health field and have worked in settings to include substance use clinics, inpatient mental health settings, and corrections facilities throughout my time in the mental health field. I have training in and utilize evidence-based approaches to include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), cognitive processing therapy (CPT), and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy (EMDR).

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

Reaching out to a therapist, attending the first session, and finding the right therapist can all be difficult steps and filled with a wide range of emotions. With that in mind, the first session will be used to introduce ourselves, learn more about you and your presenting concerns, and make sure we are a good fit to keep working together. I will ask questions about your history and presenting concern(s) and provide space for you to ask any questions you may have. At the end of the session, we will discuss what next steps look like or referrals to another provider if needed.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

As a therapist I believe my greatest strength is meeting client's where they are and keeping sessions goal oriented. I strive to set clear and concrete goals with client's and make every effort to focus sessions on progression towards meeting those goals.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I utilize CBT to assist in understanding the relationship between situations, feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. From there, CBT is utilized to identify the thoughts which are impacting one's behaviors and work to challenge and change those thoughts to in-turn change the behavior.

EMDR

I am trained in EMDR and utilize this treatment to help reprocess past memories and current situations. This treatment also involves the learning and utilization of coping skills and emotional regulation skills prior to reprocessing events.

Cognitive Processing (CPT)

CPT is a highly structured treatment for PTSD. This treatment is typically conducted over twelve sessions although the pace can be tailored based one's individual needs.

Christian Counseling

As a follower of Jesus, it would be my honor to walk with you on this journey of realizing who God created you to be and living in that truth. As we walk through the counseling process together, we can discuss your faith and utilize biblical principles to help you meet the goals you set out to achieve.

Psychodynamic

A psychodynamic approach can be incorporated into treatment to identify and help better understand how past experiences may be impacting current functioning.
