Hi, I’m Dr. Martin Alvarez, LMFT, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California. I work with adults and adolescents who are experiencing stress, anxiety, burnout, or relationship challenges and want to feel more grounded, confident, and connected in their lives. Many of the adults I work with are professionals balancing demanding careers, family responsibilities, and personal expectations. Over time, that pressure can lead to feeling overwhelmed or stuck. Therapy can provide space to slow down, gain clarity, and develop practical tools for managing stress and improving relationships. I also support adolescents who may be dealing with anxiety, academic pressure, social stress, or family conflict. My goal is to help teens build emotional awareness, confidence, and healthier ways of coping during an important stage of development. My approach is direct, compassionate, and practical, helping clients move out of survival mode and toward greater resilience, clarity, and meaningful change.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

In our first session, we’ll focus on understanding what brought you to therapy and what you hope will change. I’ll ask thoughtful questions to get a clear picture of what’s been weighing on you and the challenges you’ve been facing. You can expect a supportive and straightforward space where we begin identifying patterns that may be keeping you stuck and start outlining meaningful goals for therapy. Together, we’ll develop practical strategies that fit your real life and help move you toward lasting change.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

My greatest strength is creating a calm, steady space where clients feel understood and safe enough to be honest about what they’re going through. I believe meaningful change happens when people gain both clarity and connection. Through years of clinical work and leadership experience, I’ve helped individuals navigate stress, set healthier boundaries, and rebuild confidence in both their personal and professional lives. As a military veteran, I also bring a deep respect for people managing transitions, identity shifts, and high-pressure environments. I understand the weight of responsibility and approach that with both empathy and directness.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

I work best with adults and adolescents who feel ready for something in their lives to change, even if they’re not yet sure where to begin. You may feel burned out, anxious, or stuck in patterns that once helped you cope but no longer serve you. Many of the adults I work with are professionals, parents, or veterans carrying significant responsibility while quietly feeling overwhelmed or disconnected. I also support adolescents who may be struggling with anxiety, academic pressure, family conflict, or the challenges of navigating identity and independence. My goal is to help you slow things down, regain clarity, and make intentional decisions that align with what matters most to you. Together, we focus on building steadiness, strengthening boundaries, and creating forward movement that feels purposeful and sustainable.

My treatment methods

Eclectic

My approach to therapy is collaborative, strengths-based, and focused on helping clients move toward meaningful and sustainable change. I use a recovery-centered framework that emphasizes empowerment, resilience, and practical strategies for improving emotional well-being and daily functioning. I integrate several evidence-based approaches in my work, including Motivational Interviewing, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, and the Gottman Method for relationship work. My training in Recovery-Oriented Clinical Care Systems (RCCS) also informs how I support clients in building stability, strengthening coping skills, and reconnecting with what gives their lives meaning. Rather than using a single method for every client, I take an eclectic and individualized approach, tailoring treatment to each person’s needs, goals, and cultural background.

Family Therapy

My approach to family therapy is collaborative and focused on strengthening the relationships that shape a person’s well-being. I work with families to better understand patterns of communication, conflict, and support that influence how family members relate to one another. In our work together, we focus on improving communication, increasing understanding, and creating healthier ways of responding to challenges as a family. Family therapy provides a space where each member can be heard while we work toward building stronger connections, clearer boundaries, and more supportive family dynamics. The goal is to help families develop practical tools that improve trust, reduce conflict, and create a more stable and supportive environment for everyone involved.

Interpersonal

Interpersonal Psychotherapy focuses on how relationships, life transitions, and patterns of communication affect emotional well-being. This approach helps clients better understand how experiences such as conflict, grief, role changes, and social stress can contribute to symptoms of depression, anxiety, or emotional distress. In our work together, we examine relationship patterns and identify ways to improve communication, strengthen support systems, and navigate important life transitions more effectively. The goal is to help clients develop healthier interpersonal connections while reducing the stress and emotional difficulties that often arise in relationships. Through this process, clients gain greater insight into how their relationships impact their well-being and develop practical skills for building more supportive and meaningful connections.

Trauma-Focused CBT

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is an evidence-based approach designed to help individuals process and recover from traumatic or distressing experiences. This model focuses on understanding how trauma can affect thoughts, emotions, and behavior, and helps clients develop healthier ways of coping with those reactions. In our work together, we focus on building emotional regulation skills, strengthening coping strategies, and gradually addressing the impact of difficult experiences in a safe and supportive way. TF-CBT can help clients reduce anxiety, improve emotional stability, and regain a greater sense of control in their daily lives. Through this process, clients develop practical tools for managing stress, building resilience, and moving forward with greater confidence and stability.

Martin has been a refreshing therapist after seeing multiple therapists for years. We were able to make more progress in 3 weeks than in 3 years of couples therapy.
