My name is Lisa Ruhl and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor with training in marriage and family counseling and clinical counseling as well as a specialization in spiritual integration. My approach to counseling is to approach each client with the understanding that they are impacted by many different factors (family-of-origin, relationships, culture, experiences, mental health, spirituality, biology, etc.). Each person is a unique combination of these factors and I like to explore how these pieces combine to create the person I am helping. There is no one-size-fits-all approach and I am here to learn more about you and how we can help you work through your specific struggle.
During the first session we will discuss things like limits of confidentiality and complete intake assessment questions. There will also be time for discussing the concern that brought you to therapy in order to better determine how to move forward with the therapy process. I will discuss any diagnoses that are applicable and give you information regarding your options for treatment.
In my counseling career I have worked in multiple different settings with a variety of mental health issues. I believe that this has helped me to be flexible and creative in my implementation of a counseling approach. I am very empathetic and work hard to understand the viewpoint of my client. In everything, I work to put the wellbeing of my client first. This often looks like providing support, but sometimes means gently helping them identify things that are hindering their ability to meet their goals or pointing out areas of growth. I strongly believe that my role is to both support and encourage growth.
I work best with individuals who are motivated to heal by incorporating counseling techniques that are congruent with a Biblical worldview. My approach typically includes talking through problems in order to gain clarity and incorporating work outside of sessions to accelerate the healing process. I seek to help those I work with utilize their values, strengths, and experiences to develop new skills, adjust unhelpful approaches/thought processes, and achieve a greater alignment with their worth as an image bearer of the Creator.

I specialize in integration of Biblical truth and counseling techniques as a holistic approach to wellness and health.
Cognitive behavioral therapy focuses on thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. This treatment notes that all three are present in most mental health issues and that they influence eachother. This therapy approach is one of the most commonly used methods in the counseling field and has been backed by research as one of the most effective therapy approaches.
One of the two approaches that I utilize to address trauma and PTSD is Cognitive Processing Therapy. It builds upon the foundation of cognitive behavioral therapy and focuses on beliefs/thought patterns developed by the traumatic event and teaches ways of changing these beliefs/thought patterns.
This therapy approach has been utilized by the VA and is effective in helping those with severe PTSD symptoms who want to work hard to quickly recover and heal from the trauma. This is ideal for those who want to jump in feet first and do the daily work to feel better fast!
This therapy approach has been shown to be effective for those struggling with relationships, emotional regulation, and impulsivity. It incorporates mindfulness skills, coping skills, emotional regulation skills, and interpersonal relationship skills.
