Hi, I'm Shawn Smith, a psychiatric nurse provider. I'm really glad you're here today. Before we get started, I just want to help you feel a little more at ease about what to expect. This is a safe, judgement-free space where you speak openly. A lot of people feel nervous during their first session, and that's completely normal-you don't have to have everything fingered out or know exactly what to say. During this first visit, my main goal is to get to know you, We'll talk about what's been going on, how you've been feeling, and what you'd like help with. I'll ask some questions to better understand your symptoms, your history, and what's affecting your day-today life. We'll also talk about possible treatment options, including whether medications might be helpful. I use evidence-base guidelines, and I'll always explain things clearly and answer any questions you have so you feel comfortable with the plan. I want you to know I take my time to listen. You won't be rushed, and your concerns matter. My goal is to work with you in a way that feels supportive, honest and helpful. By the end of the session, we'll have a clear plan moving forward and you'll know what the next steps look like. Whenever you're ready, can you start by telling me what brought you in today.
My greatest strength is my ability to support patients through recovery with both empathy and structure. I understand that substance use is often complex and deeply personal, and I provide a nonjudgmental space while also offering clear, evidence-based treatment. By combining medication management with practical strategies, I help patients build consistency, regain control, and make steady progress toward long-term recovery. My style balances genuine care with meaningful care with thoughtful directness. I provide a supportive, nonjudgmental space while also offering honest feedback and appropriate challenge to help clients move forward with clarity and intention. I maintain a strong focus on outcomes. Progress is consistently evaluated, and when results are not where they should be, I adjust the treatment approach to better align with the client's needs. My work is not static-I adapt refine, and stay engaged in the process to ensure therapy remains effective and purposeful. This approach allows my client's to not only gain insight, but to develop the structure, confidence, and skills needed for lasting, meaningful change.
I am best positioned to work with adults who are struggling with substance use, particularly opioid dependence, as well as those experiencing anxiety, ADHD, or mood-related challenges alongside it. Many of my clients feel stuck in cycles of use, withdrawal, or relapse, and may be overwhelmed, mentally exhausted, or unsure of how to move forward. You may find yourself trying to manage responsibilities while quietly struggling, or feeling frustrated by repeated attempts to regain control. Some clients come in ready to start treatment, while others are still unsure but know something needs to change. Both are welcome. I work well with individuals who are open to a structured, goal-oriented approach that combines medication management—including treatment with Suboxone when appropriate—with practical therapeutic strategies. My approach integrates cognitive behavioral techniques to help identify patterns, manage cravings, improve coping, and support long-term stability. Clients who benefit most from working with me are those who are looking for a balance of support and direct guidance. I provide a nonjudgmental environment while also helping you stay accountable and focused on progress.
I identify as
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
My primary treatment modality is Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), an evidence-base approach that focuses on the connections between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. I have over 2 years experience utilizing CBT in clinical practice to support individual with ADHD, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorders, and substance use disorders. In my work CBT is used to help clients identify unhelpful thought patterns, to increase awareness of behavior responses, and develop more effective coping strategies. I guide clients in learning how their thinking influences their emotional experiences and decision-making and we work together to challenge and restructure patterns that contribute to distress or dysfunction. Treatment is active and goal-oriented. Clients are encouraged to apply skills outside of sessions, track progress, and participant in structured interventions that promote measurable change. I tailor CBT techniques to each individual's needs, ensuring that strategies are practical, realistic and directly applicable to their daily life. My focus is not only on symptoms reduction, but on building long-term skills that improves emotional regulation, decision-making, and overall functioning. Progress is consistently evaluated, and interventions are adjusted as needed to ensure that care remains effective and aligned with the client's goals.
