About me

My name is Melonee Gibson-Cabrera, and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (MA, LPC). I believe that therapy is more than addressing symptoms or receiving a diagnosis—it is an opportunity to better understand yourself, recognize what you need, and learn how to navigate life in a healthier and more fulfilling way. My desire to help others began at a young age. Growing up, I participated in community service through my church, including supporting older adults and helping provide food and resources to individuals experiencing homelessness. Those experiences strengthened my compassion for others and helped me recognize something that has remained central to my work today: simply living life can sometimes carry an incredible emotional weight. That understanding eventually led me to the counseling profession in 2005 and, in 2018, to opening my private practice in the greater Atlanta area.

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

During therapy, my goal is to educate, encourage, support, and empower you. Together, we can identify patterns, strengthen coping skills, explore healthier responses, and help you make decisions that are more aligned with the person you want to become. You do not have to have everything figured out before beginning therapy. Sometimes the first step is simply having a safe place to sort through what life has placed in front of you. My hope is that our work together helps you understand yourself more deeply, trust yourself more confidently, and develop the tools you need to navigate both the difficult and meaningful parts of life—so you can create more fulfilling, better days.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

My approach to therapy is person-centered and incorporates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), along with practical strategies that help clients better understand the connection between their thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and life experiences. I want the people I work with to have a space where they can be honest about what they are experiencing without feeling judged, while also being supported and challenged toward meaningful change. I believe understanding is empowering. If you are experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, life transitions, emotional overwhelm, or adjusting to a diagnosis, I want you to understand not only what you are experiencing, but also what you can do with that understanding.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

My ideal client is someone who is ready to get ready for change. You may not know exactly what needs to change or how to get there, and you may even feel uncertain about taking the first step. That’s okay. What matters is that there is a part of you that recognizes that something in your life could be different. You may be struggling with anxiety, depression, emotional overwhelm, relationship concerns, life transitions, or patterns that seem to keep repeating themselves. Perhaps you want to understand yourself better, respond differently to difficult situations, strengthen your relationships, or simply feel more in control of the direction of your life. I enjoy working with clients who are willing to become curious about themselves—their thoughts, emotions, behaviors, needs, and choices. You don’t have to come to therapy with all the answers. We can work together to understand where you are, identify where you would like to be, and develop practical tools to help you move toward meaningful and lasting change.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help you better understand the connection between your thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and the way you respond to life experiences. In our work together, we may slow down and look at what happened, what you thought or believed in that moment, how it made you feel, and what you did next. This can help us identify patterns that may be contributing to anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, emotional distress, or behaviors that no longer serve you well. CBT is not about telling you that your thoughts or feelings are wrong. Your thoughts and emotions often have something important to tell us. Instead, I will help you become curious about them. We may ask: Is this thought based on what is happening now, or is a past experience influencing how I am interpreting this situation? Is this response helping me get where I want to go? What might be another way of looking at or responding to this? From there, we work on practical strategies that you can use outside of therapy. This may include challenging unhelpful thinking patterns, developing healthier coping skills, improving emotional regulation, practicing boundaries, changing behavioral patterns, and learning how to respond more intentionally rather than simply reacting in the moment.

Person-centered (Rogerian)

Most importantly, I don’t use CBT as a one-size-fits-all formula. I combine it with a person-centered approach, which means we begin with you—your experiences, your values, your needs, your goals, and the person you are working toward becoming. My goal is not to teach you how to never have difficult thoughts or emotions. My goal is to help you understand yourself well enough that when those moments come, you have more tools, more choices, and greater confidence in how you choose to respond.
