Denise Jefferson
I’m Denise Jefferson, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with over 10 years of experience helping individuals, couples, and families navigate life’s challenges. My practice provides a supportive, confidential, and nonjudgmental space for those experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship concerns, grief, and emotional difficulties.
I don't believe therapy should be a place where you simply talk about your problems without developing the tools to address them.
I use evidence-based therapeutic approaches tailored to each client’s unique needs, empowering them to develop healthier coping skills, strengthen relationships, and achieve meaningful personal growth. My goal is to meet you where you are and walk alongside you on your journey toward healing and emotional wellness.
First session
Your first session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another, discuss what brought you to therapy, and begin building a foundation for your healing journey. I understand that starting therapy can feel intimidating, especially if this is your first experience, so my priority is to create a welcoming, comfortable, and judgment-free environment. During our initial session, we will review your background, current concerns, relevant history, and the challenges you would like to address. We will also discuss your personal goals, what you hope to gain from therapy, and your expectations for the therapeutic process. Together, we will begin developing an individualized treatment plan that identifies your goals, outlines our therapeutic approach, and establishes realistic expectations for your progress. I will also explain confidentiality, session structure, and what you can expect as we move forward. Most importantly, you will have the opportunity to ask questions, express concerns, and share your story at your own pace. You do not have to figure everything out during our first meeting. My goal is for you to leave feeling heard, supported, and confident about the next steps in your journey toward healing and personal growth.
Strengths
I bring a combination of compassion, authenticity, clinical expertise, and genuine understanding to every session. With over 10 years of experience, I recognize that no two individuals share the same experiences, challenges, or needs. My approach is warm, collaborative, and nonjudgmental, but I also believe in gently challenging clients to recognize patterns, explore difficult emotions, and make meaningful changes. One of my greatest strengths is my ability to meet people where they are while helping them discover where they want to be. I don't believe therapy should be a place where you simply talk about your problems without developing the tools to address them. I incorporate evidence-based interventions, practical strategies, and honest conversations that encourage growth beyond the therapy room. Above all, I strive to create an environment where clients feel heard, respected, supported, and empowered. I believe in celebrating progress, embracing individuality, and reminding clients that their challenges are only one part of their story, not the entirety of who they are.
Ideal clients
My ideal client is someone who is ready to experience meaningful change, even if they are unsure where to begin. They may be struggling with anxiety, depression, unresolved trauma, grief, relationship challenges, anger, or simply feeling overwhelmed by life's demands. They may have spent years putting others first, carrying emotional burdens, or repeating patterns that no longer serve them. I enjoy working with individuals who are willing to explore their experiences, challenge unhealthy patterns, and develop a deeper understanding of themselves. You do not have to have everything figured out, know exactly what to say, or even feel completely ready for change. All I ask is that you come with an open mind and a willingness to take the first step. Whether your goal is to heal from past experiences, improve your relationships, strengthen your emotional well-being, or rediscover who you are, I am here to help you move forward. I believe everyone deserves the opportunity to build a life that feels healthy, fulfilling, and genuinely their own.
Treatment methods
Solution-Focused Brief Treatment
I use Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) to help clients shift their focus from feeling overwhelmed by problems to identifying practical solutions and meaningful goals. Rather than concentrating solely on what is going wrong, we explore your existing strengths, past successes, and the resources you already possess to create positive change. Through goal-setting, guided questions, and collaborative conversations, I help you recognize what is working, identify small but achievable steps, and build confidence in your ability to overcome challenges. This approach is especially helpful for clients navigating life transitions, relationship difficulties, stress, and personal challenges. My goal is to help you recognize that you already possess valuable strengths and that even small changes can lead to significant improvements in your life.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help clients understand how their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors influence one another. Together, we identify negative thought patterns, unhelpful beliefs, and behaviors that may contribute to anxiety, depression, stress, or relationship difficulties. Through guided discussions, cognitive restructuring, and practical skill-building exercises, I help clients challenge unhealthy thinking patterns, develop healthier coping strategies, and respond to difficult situations more effectively. My goal is to equip you with practical tools that extend beyond our sessions, helping you improve emotional regulation, build self-confidence, and create lasting changes in your everyday life.
Motivational Interviewing
I use Motivational Interviewing (MI) to help clients explore their feelings about change, overcome uncertainty, and strengthen their motivation to achieve personal goals. I recognize that making meaningful changes can be difficult, especially when you feel stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure of where to begin. Through compassionate, nonjudgmental conversations, reflective listening, and guided exploration, I help you identify your personal values, recognize barriers to change, and discover your own reasons for moving forward. My approach is collaborative rather than directive. I believe lasting change is most meaningful when it comes from within. My goal is to empower you to build confidence in your decisions, strengthen your commitment to personal growth, and take realistic steps toward creating the life you desire.
Person-centered (Rogerian)
I use Person-Centered Therapy to create a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental environment where clients feel genuinely heard, understood, and accepted. I believe every individual has unique experiences, strengths, and the capacity for personal growth when provided with the right therapeutic support. Through empathy, active listening, authenticity, and unconditional positive regard, I encourage clients to explore their thoughts, emotions, and experiences at their own pace. Rather than directing your journey, I work alongside you, respecting your individuality and empowering you to make decisions that align with your values and goals. My goal is to help you develop greater self-awareness, strengthen your self-worth, build confidence, and create meaningful changes that support your emotional well-being and personal growth.
Trauma-Informed Care
I incorporate Trauma-Informed Care into my practice by recognizing how past experiences can influence a person's emotions, behaviors, relationships, and overall well-being. I understand that trauma affects everyone differently, and healing requires an environment built on safety, trust, compassion, and respect. My approach emphasizes emotional safety, collaboration, transparency, and personal empowerment. I work with clients to understand how their experiences may be affecting their present lives while helping them develop healthy coping strategies, strengthen emotional regulation, and rebuild their sense of control. I never believe in rushing the healing process or requiring clients to revisit painful experiences before they feel ready. Instead, we move at a pace that respects your comfort, boundaries, and individual needs. My goal is to help you recognize that while trauma may be part of your story, it does not have to define your future. Together, we work toward healing, resilience, and creating a life where you feel safe, empowered, and emotionally fulfilled.
