Dr. Johnnetta Jennings, Ph.D.
I’m a licensed professional counselor with a doctorate in counseling, I have over 12 years of experience. I’m warm, down-to-earth, and easy to talk to, but I’ll also challenge you when needed. I believe therapy should feel safe, genuine, and practical. Together, we’ll make sense of what you’re experiencing and work toward meaningful change.
First session
Your first session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another and begin understanding what brought you to therapy. We’ll talk about what you’re experiencing, what you hope to change, and what you would like to gain from therapy. You can expect a comfortable, judgment-free conversation without pressure to share more than you’re ready to discuss. By the end of our first session, we’ll have identified your primary concerns, discussed your goals, and begun developing a plan for moving forward together.
Strengths
I bring warmth, authenticity, compassion, humor, and more than a decade of clinical experience into the therapy room. I’m a good listener, but I’m also an active therapist. I ask questions, offer feedback, help you recognize patterns, and encourage you to look at situations from different perspectives. My clients can expect a judgment-free environment where difficult conversations are welcome and where we can also laugh when appropriate. I’m especially skilled at helping people take complicated or overwhelming situations and break them into manageable pieces. My goal is for you to leave our sessions not only feeling heard, but also with greater insight and practical strategies you can use in your everyday life.
Ideal clients
My ideal client is someone who may feel overwhelmed, stuck, anxious, or uncertain about what comes next, but is ready for something to change. You may be navigating a life transition, relationship challenges, past experiences, or patterns that no longer serve you. You don’t have to have everything figured out before coming to therapy. I work best with clients who are willing to be honest, curious about themselves, and open to being both supported and challenged.
Treatment methods
Acceptance and commitment (ACT)
I use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help clients recognize and accept difficult thoughts and emotions without allowing them to control their choices. Together, we identify personal values, build psychological flexibility, and develop meaningful actions that support the life they want to create.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help clients identify connections between their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Together, we explore unhelpful thinking patterns, develop healthier perspectives, and practice practical coping strategies that support positive changes in everyday life.
Dialectical Behavior (DBT)
I use Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to help clients better understand and manage intense emotions, improve relationships, and respond to stressful situations in healthier ways. Together, we build practical skills in emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and effective communication.
Person-centered (Rogerian)
I use a person-centered approach to create a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental space where clients feel heard, understood, and respected. I meet clients where they are, honor their individual experiences, and work collaboratively to help them recognize their strengths and move toward meaningful personal growth.
Solution-Focused Brief Treatment
I use Solution-Focused Brief Therapy to help clients identify their strengths, recognize what is already working, and focus on practical steps toward the changes they want to make. Together, we establish clear goals, explore solutions rather than staying focused on problems, and build on past successes to create achievable strategies for moving forward.
