New to Grow
My name is Susan O’Connell. I am an experienced Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor with a Master’s Degree from Loyola University Chicago and specialized training in Family and Couples Therapy at the Chicago Center for Family Health. For over 29 years, I have worked extensively with individual adults, couples, families, adolescents, and children. I create a warm, accepting atmosphere in which to work with clients and find solutions. I help identify my clients’ strengths and resiliencies.
In our first session together, here's what you can expect
During our first session, we will talk about your concerns, the reason you are seeking therapy, what you might have tried to solve your problem(s), and what might have worked. We will begin to get to know each other.
The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions
As a result of our work together, my clients are able to change and grow, to better accept themselves and to realize their goals. My strengths include effective assessment and treatment, and cross-cultural therapy with individuals from diverse backgrounds. I have a special interest in families dealing with divorce and its aftermath, loss and grief, and chronic illness. I also possess in-depth knowledge and experience with giftedness and with issues affecting musicians and dancers. I provide therapy in both English and French.
The clients I'm best positioned to serve
My ideal clients are those who are open to working together, being honest, sharing their feelings, and consistently attending scheduled sessions.
Eclectic
I use a combination of methods. The most important aspect of therapy is the relationship between the therapist and the client.
Gottman method
I have specialized training in using the Gottman method for couples therapy.
Strength-Based
I believe in using a client's strengths to address the issue(s) at hand.
