New to Grow
Hi, I’m Janisia McGowan-Evans LPC. I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor with a Master of Science in Counseling and a post graduate certificate in Systemic Couple and Family Therapy. I’m passionate about creating a safe and supportive space where people can feel truly heard and understood. My goal as a therapist is to walk alongside you as you navigate life’s challenges, helping you uncover your strengths and build the tools you need to feel more grounded, confident, and connected.
Starting therapy can feel exciting—and sometimes a little intimidating. The first session is about building trust, feeling heard, and laying the foundation for growth. You’re not expected to have all the answers—you’re simply taking the first step toward change. Here’s what your first session will usually look like: Getting to Know You: Share what brought you to therapy Talk about your background and current concerns You only share what feels comfortable Intake & Confidentiality: Review of paperwork and policies Learn how confidentiality works (and its limits for safety) Setting Goals Together Explore what you’d like to get out of therapy: Goals can be big (reduce anxiety) or small (learn coping skills) What the Session Feels Like: A relaxed conversation, not an interrogation Your therapist listens without judgment No pressure to share everything right away
I take a client-centered approach, which means I believe you are the expert of your own life. I offer empathy, compassion, and unconditional positive regard so you can explore your thoughts and feelings without judgment. At the same time, I integrate practical, evidence-based tools from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and other approaches to help you manage stress, shift unhelpful thought patterns, and make meaningful changes.
I specialize in supporting people who are experiencing: Anxiety, worry, or panic Life transitions or self-esteem challenges Depression or low motivation Relationship struggles and communication issues Emotional regulation I believe therapy is a collaborative journey. You bring your experiences and goals, and I bring curiosity, compassion, and effective strategies. Together, we’ll create a space where you can heal, grow, and move toward the life you want to live.
Therapy that is tailored to meet your unique needs. I use talk therapy that helps you notice how your thoughts, feelings, and actions are connected. By changing unhelpful thoughts and behaviors, you can improve how you feel and cope with challenges.
This approach focuses on you as the expert of your own life. The therapist’s My role is not to give advice or direct you, but to provide a safe and supportive space where you can explore your own thoughts, feelings, and experiences.
I help couples understand their relationship problems, develop strategies for resolving issues like financial stress, parenting differences, or infidelity, and learn healthier ways to support each other.
