Sheila McCoy
I'm Dr. Sheila McCoy, and I provide compassionate, personalized counseling for adults and adolescents navigating depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, addiction, and self-esteem concerns. My goal is to help you develop healthier coping skills, build emotional resilience, and move toward lasting healing and personal growth.
You don't have to face life's challenges alone. I provide compassionate, personalized counseling to help adults and adolescents find healing, build resilience, and create lasting change, integrating faith-based principles when desired.
I offer a supportive, nonjudgmental space where you can feel heard and understood.
First session
Your first session is an opportunity to share your concerns, discuss what brings you to therapy, and identify what you hope to achieve. I will listen with compassion, answer your questions, and work with you to begin identifying your strengths and areas for growth. You can expect a welcoming, nonjudgmental space where you feel heard, respected, and supported as we begin developing a plan tailored to your needs.
Strengths
My approach is compassionate, structured, and collaborative. I combine evidence-based counseling with practical coping strategies and, when desired, faith-based principles. I strive to create a safe, nonjudgmental space where clients can build resilience, break unhealthy patterns, and achieve meaningful change.
Ideal clients
My ideal clients are adults and adolescents navigating depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, addiction, or self-esteem challenges. They may feel overwhelmed, discouraged, or stuck in unhealthy patterns and want to find a healthier way forward. They are open to exploring their experiences, understanding their emotions, and developing practical coping skills. I work with clients who desire emotional healing, stronger relationships, increased confidence, and lasting personal growth. My goal is to provide a compassionate, supportive, and nonjudgmental environment where clients feel heard, valued, and empowered to make meaningful changes. When desired, faith-based principles can be integrated into the counseling process.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help clients understand how their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors influence one another. Together, we identify unhelpful thinking patterns, challenge negative beliefs, and develop healthier ways of responding to life's challenges. I teach practical coping strategies to manage anxiety, depression, stress, and emotional difficulties while building confidence and resilience. Sessions are collaborative and goal-oriented, allowing clients to practice new skills, recognize progress, and make meaningful changes in their daily lives. When desired, I integrate faith-based principles with evidence-based CBT techniques to support emotional healing and personal growth.
Trauma-Focused CBT
I use trauma-informed, cognitive behavioral strategies to help clients understand how traumatic experiences may affect their thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and relationships. I prioritize emotional safety, trust, and stabilization while helping clients identify trauma-related beliefs, develop healthy coping skills, and strengthen emotional regulation. Treatment is paced according to each client's readiness and individual needs, with an emphasis on building resilience and restoring a sense of control. My goal is to support clients in processing difficult experiences, reducing distress, and moving toward healing and improved emotional well-being. When desired, faith-based principles may be incorporated alongside appropriate evidence-based interventions.
Motivational Interviewing
I use Motivational Interviewing to help clients explore their readiness for change, identify personal strengths, and discover their own motivation for reaching their goals. Through open-ended questions, reflective listening, and compassionate support, I help clients explore ambivalence, recognize barriers, and build confidence in their ability to make positive changes. This approach is especially helpful for clients experiencing addiction, unhealthy behavioral patterns, or difficulty maintaining progress. My goal is to empower clients to make informed decisions, develop meaningful goals, and take practical steps toward lasting change while respecting their values, experiences, and individual pace.
