Kate (she/her) is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Registered Play Therapist Supervisor with 17 years of experience in community mental health, school-based, and outpatient settings. Kate is dedicated to supporting individuals of all ages as they navigate trauma, grief and loss, anxiety, depression, relationship stressors, and challenging life circumstances. Her goal is to create a warm, non-judgemental, encouraging, and collaborative environment where clients feel safe, supported and empowered as they work towards finding meaning. She is LGBTQIA+ allied and affirming and hopes to create an inclusive space for people of all racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds. Her person-centered and strengths-based approach includes psychodynamic therapy and she integrates EMDR, mindfulness, DBT, play therapy, sand tray, and expressive arts. Kate previously worked with animals, has studied animal-assisted play therapy with Rise VanFleet, Ph.D., and may incorporate this when appropriate. She also enjoys doing supervision for those working towards their RPT (Registered Play Therapist) credential. Outside of her therapeutic work, Kate enjoys spending time with her dog and cat, exploring nature, and taking art classes.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

During the first session, you will have time to ask me questions and see if I am the right fit for you. We will discuss your concerns, hopes and goals for therapy.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

In additional to experience and training in trauma informed care, I promise to bring compassion, understanding and sometimes humor, to therapy sessions.

My treatment methods

EMDR

EMDR is a useful modality to help work through traumatic and adverse experiences on an emotional and somatic, in addition to cognitive, level. It enables clients to feel relief and reshape the negative thoughts about self that can develop based on those traumatic experiences, in a lasting way.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

Mindfulness techniques are used to support EMDR work and to help individuals learn to reverse the physiological responses to trauma and use their nervous system and body as a resource for healing.

Person-centered (Rogerian)

Even the best therapeutic tools won't be the best tools for everyone. I would like to collaborate with each individual to create a safe therapeutic relationship and setting where we can work at the pace that is right for them, and together figure out which tools feel safest and most effective for them.

Sandplay

I am a Registered Play Therapy Supervisor and have a certificate in Expressive Arts Therapy. I believe in the power of playfulness and engaging in a creative process as a means to learn about ourselves, heal and process our difficult experiences and feelings.

Trauma Informed Care

I have been working with trauma survivors for 17 years and have received extensive training in trauma. While different modalities may be incorporated into the therapy process (talk, EMDR, expressive arts, sand, play), depending on individual needs and preferences, all will be in the context of latest of research on trauma informed care.
