About me

Hi, I’m Andrew MacMillan, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker offering virtual therapy in Massachusetts and North Carolina. I work with adults navigating a wide range of challenges, including ADHD, anxiety, depression, relationship stress, and life transitions. My approach is collaborative, affirming, and grounded in the belief that you are the expert on your own life. Therapy with me is a space where you can be honest, uncertain, overwhelmed, or stuck — without judgment. Together, we’ll explore what’s getting in the way and develop tools that help you move toward clarity, self-compassion, and emotional balance. I draw from a range of evidence-based practices including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). I often support clients with emotion regulation, identity exploration, and longstanding patterns related to personality dynamics or relational trauma. I have particular experience working with neurodivergent adults — especially those who may have masked for years or struggled to feel understood in traditional therapy settings. My style is warm, nonjudgmental, and often infused with humor, because therapy doesn’t have to feel clinical or cold to be effective. Whether you’re coming in with a specific goal or just a sense that something needs to shift, we can figure it out together. I’ve worked with a wide range of presentations and always strive to meet people where they are. If you're curious about working together, feel free to reach out to schedule a consultation. I’d love to learn more about what you’re looking for and help you decide if I’m the right fit.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

In our first session, we’ll focus on getting to know each other and building a sense of comfort and safety. I’ll ask some questions about what’s bringing you in, what’s been going on lately, and what you’re hoping to get out of therapy — but there’s no pressure to have all the answers. You’re welcome to share at your own pace. We’ll also talk a bit about your history, patterns that may be showing up, and how I can best support you. You can expect a mix of curiosity, compassion, and honest conversation — along with some humor if it feels right. My goal is for you to leave the session feeling heard, supported, and like you have a clearer idea of what working together might look like.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

Clients often tell me they feel comfortable opening up with me quickly — that I bring a mix of warmth, humor, and directness that makes it easier to be real. I meet people where they are, without judgment or pretense, and I’m not afraid to gently challenge patterns when it’s helpful. I pull from multiple evidence-based approaches (ACT, DBT, CBT, and SFBT), but I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all therapy. What stands out about my work is how tailored it is — whether you need help managing intense emotions, navigating relationships, or understanding how your ADHD or anxiety shows up day to day, we’ll build a plan that works for you. I’m especially attuned to clients who may have felt misunderstood or unseen in previous therapy experiences — whether because of neurodivergence, emotional intensity, or just not fitting into neat diagnostic boxes. I bring a strong grounding in clinical skill, but I also bring humanity and a sense of humor to the process.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

I work well with a wide range of adults navigating ADHD, anxiety, emotional regulation challenges, relationship stress, and major life transitions. My ideal clients don’t need to fit one specific profile — some are brand new to therapy, others have been in and out for years. What matters most is a willingness to show up, be curious, and explore what’s getting in the way of feeling more grounded, connected, or like yourself again. Whether you’re looking for practical coping tools, deeper insight, or support in untangling long-standing patterns, we’ll work together to find a path forward that fits you. Many of my clients come in feeling overwhelmed or stuck — unsure of where to start — and that's okay. You don’t need to have the “right” words or a perfectly clear goal. You just have to show up as you are. Clients who tend to thrive in our work are open to a little humor, okay with direct feedback, and willing to reflect — even when it’s hard. I offer a space that’s collaborative and down-to-earth, where you can be real and not feel like you have to perform. Therapy with me often balances structure with flexibility, skill-building with self-understanding. If you’re not sure what you’re looking for, or if you’ve had mixed experiences with therapy before, that’s welcome here too. We’ll take things at your pace and figure it out together.
