In our first session together, here's what you can expect

The first therapy session can feel tedious. There are disclosures to review, informed consent forms to sign, and the often uncomfortable task of telling your story all over again. For many people, that can feel overwhelming. I recognize that, which is why I prefer for clients to complete their paperwork before our first session whenever possible. This allows me to review the information ahead of time and make any necessary updates during our appointment rather than spending most of our time focused on forms. My goal is to make the first session feel less like an interview and more like two people meeting at a coffee shop after time apart—taking time to catch up, review what has happened in the meantime, and begin building a genuine therapeutic relationship. While we will discuss the concerns that brought you to therapy, I strive to create a comfortable, relaxed environment where you can share at your own pace and feel heard from the very beginning.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

I have known since I was 11 years old that I was called to be a social worker. I earned my Bachelor's degree in Social Work in my twenties; however, as life often does, it got in the way, and I did not pursue the profession further at that time. Years later, I found myself in a very low place and decided to seek therapy. I remember being surprised to learn that my therapist was not a psychologist, but a social worker. During our session, she asked me what I wanted my life to look like. Without thinking, I replied, "I want to be where you are." She looked at me and said, "Then go do it." I was completely caught off guard. She asked, "What's the first step?" "Finish my education," I answered. "Then go do that," she said. I remember thinking of all the reasons why I couldn't. I was bipolar. I was dyslexic. I had responsibilities, fears, and doubts. I never said those things out loud, but she knew exactly what I was doing—I was making excuses because I was afraid. She simply encouraged me to take the next step. I would love to tell you that I enrolled in college the next day, but that is not how my story went. The journey was long, and there were plenty of obstacles along the way. What changed everything was acknowledging that I was stuck and that I needed help. That conversation became the beginning of a new chapter in my life. It taught me that meaningful change does not happen all at once. It starts with a single step and the courage to believe that things can be different. Today, I strive to offer my clients the same hope, encouragement, and support that therapist offered me. If I can help even one person the way she helped me, then every step of my journey has been worth it.
