Michelle Lindsay
Welcome! I'm Michelle Lindsay. I’m a seasoned mental health professional who genuinely loves helping adolescents and adults overcome obstacles, discover their strengths, and move from simply getting by to truly thriving. Through my practice, Emerge and Become, I offer a warm, encouraging, and collaborative approach that helps you build confidence, develop practical tools, and create meaningful change. I especially enjoy helping people navigate worry, feeling overwhelmed, and the many transitions life brings—from the challenges of adolescence and launching into adulthood to empty nesting, menopause, relationships and other seasons of change and disrupting life events. I believe these transitions, while sometimes difficult, can become opportunities for growth, renewed purpose, and exciting new possibilities.
Hi! I'm Michelle, I genuinely love helping people identify and overcome obstacles, discover their courage, and move from being stuck or simply getting by to truly thriving!
I also have a passion for helping individuals navigate substance use and make lasting changes that support the life they want to live. Whether you’re working to break self-defeating patterns, manage life’s challenges, or find a new direction, I believe in meeting you where you are, building on your strengths, and helping you move forward with confidence and hope. With decades of experience helping people through life’s challenges, I believe you don’t have to have everything figured out to begin moving forward. Sometimes, the most meaningful growth starts with discovering what’s possible. If you’re ready to reconnect with your strengths, approach life with greater confidence, and emerge into the person you want to become, I invite you to take the next step and begin therapy. Reach out today to schedule a consultation and learn how we can work together toward meaningful change.
First session
I hope a client leaving their first session with me feels HOPE. I would want them to feel heard, and understood. I hope they would feel a sense of increased understanding about themselves and have a clear direction of what's next and what they might do during the week between sessions to continue to progress. We may not have figured everyting out yet, but clients will feel we are on the right path.
Strengths
My approach is client centered and collaborative. I always ask what a new client's experience with therapy has been. I want to learn from their past, what has worked or not worked so I don't waste their time. Therapists can be annoying, talk too much, push a certain approach or follow their own agenda. I don't want to repeat those mistakes, so understanding what works for the client is key. I value a clients strengths, values, goals and lived experiences I also bring the ability to confront patterns that may be getting in the way of change. I have a unique ability to bring ineffective patterns to light yet directing the focus on what is more desirable and more effective ways of functioning. Another important strength I bring to my work is my ability to make important space for a person's faith and individual belief in God or a higher power. Faith can play an important role in achieving desired change. For clients who draw strength from God or their faith, I welcome the opportunity to honor that dimension of their healing journey. I believe faith and therapy can work together meaningfully while respecting each client’s beliefs, values, and preferences.
Ideal clients
My ideal client is someone who is tired of the status quo. Someone who wants to become more aware of the patterns, beleifs or behaviors that get in their way of truly being happy and productive. I work well with clients who struggle with worry, overwhelm, depression, or are finding themselves feeling stuck and not sure how to move forward. If your are in a new stage or experience in life and struggling to transition successfully I'm your person. I also work with betrayal trauma and restoring trust in self and others.
Treatment methods
Acceptance and commitment (ACT)
I use this method to help clients discover negative patterns that may not be working for them. On the flip side we work on identifying their values and what is important to them, what they want that they are not getting in their life. Seeing what you want and how to get there creates energy for change. We will work together to see if there is conflict between their current patterns and what is truly important to them. Accepting these patterns without shame and learning how to choose what they want instead are motivators for the work required to get different results. Together we will take small meaningful steps while learning to accept and tolerate the uncomfortable feelings that come with it and life in general.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
We will use CBT to help you become aware of thinking patterns and possible negative beliefs taking up unwanted space in your head. We will identify specifically how these beliefs might be limiting your ability to see other possibilities, see your strengths clearly, and teeing you up for negative outcomes. Choosing beliefs that actually serve you better and create positive emotions, actions, and results will be a part of your success journey.
Faith-based therapy
I will use faith based therapy when appropriate to build upon a clients beliefs and inviting God or a higher power into their healing journey. I beleive this can empower and create strength for needed change.
Motivational Interviewing
I use this technique to break through mixed feelings about change. Sometimes we are ambivalent and fear what actually changing might look like. Often their is a fear of loss that comes with change or possible fears of failing. This technique allows for client autonomy but invites curiosity about what might be behind ambivalence to change.
Attachment-based
We might use Attachment based therapy to determine if healthy forms of attachment may have been disrupted during development in order to inform possible ways of interacting in relationships in the present.
