New to Grow
My name is Rufus, a native of Northeast Ohio. I hold a bachelor’s degree in psychology and master’s degree in clinical counseling from Cleveland State University. I identify as a gay black cis gendered male. Through my lived experience I stand out for my ability to listen with empathy and intention. I prioritize creating a space for individuals to share their truth without interruption, allowing for deeper understanding and more effective support. I believe in creating and fostering relationships through the authentic expression of self. Through perseverance and hard work, I have committed myself to serving the community especially the most vulnerable populations. I am a natural problem solver and strongly believe in the power of community and support. To my pleasure I have been honored to receive recognition from both public and private organizations for my diligence and commitment. I live by the mantra of, "You are the story you tell yourself" & "To whom much is given, much is required."
In our first session together, here's what you can expect
The first session will be viewed as a way of "getting to know." During this session we will talk about our roles and the limitations that come with this. To better understand you, I would like to gather additional background information to better assess your needs. Additionally, we will collaborate on identifying therapeutic goals so that there is a mutual understanding.
The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions
With over a decade of crisis management experience, I intentionally work towards creating a safe space with zero room for judgement. My job is to walk with you while offering a gentle push, when necessary, in an effort of achieving your identified goals. I am naturally patient; I listen with intent; and above all seek to understand your worldview. I gather data throughout the therapeutic process as a way of determining the effectiveness of the interventions utilized.
The clients I'm best positioned to serve
I have experience working through family conflict, working with at-risk youth, and crisis management. My ideal client is one who is willing to be vulnerable, open, and willing. I am committed to helping clients across a range of concerns from mood disorders, learning disabilities, and those with serious mental health issues.
Acceptance and commitment (ACT)
With acceptant and commitment therapy I heavily emphasize the realities of the world we must navigate daily and that comes with experiences that are sometimes negative and painful. I don't attempt to shy away from realities and instead give space for all human emotions while empowering one to still make movement towards creating a life of harmony.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
With cognitive behavioral therapy I work to identify and understand the patterns of the client, both conscious and unconscious. I align with the behavioralist approach as behavior is often learned and motivated. With cognitive behavioral therapy I identify the discrepancy between one's beliefs and their actions and assist with identifying more adaptive ways of thinking that are more helpful than harmful.
Gender-affirming therapy
I strongly believe that gender is a social construct. I offer a safe place for one to show up and express themselves in a way that they feel is the most authentic therefore aligning with their inner sense of self.
