Hello! I'm Josh Fowler. I hold a license as an Independent Marriage/Family Therapist (IMFT) serving clients in Ohio. I received my Masters from East Carolina University in the Master of Science in Marriage/Family Therapy program, and I have been practicing as a family therapist since 2013 (so about 12 years now). I primarily work with adults around challenges including behavioral concerns or problems, mood disorders, self-image difficulties, depression/anxiety symptoms, and relationship conflict (a primary focus of mine), among others.I hope you'll find my conversational style relaxed, professional, welcoming, direct, and accepting.
In the first meeting, we'll exchange some introductions with one another, and I will give you a good chunk of the session time to let me know, in your own words, specifically what's most important to discuss -- the specific challenges or concerns you have. I like to spend the bulk of session time on these things. Additionally, I will listen to and answer any questions you may have about therapy during all sessions, but in particular our first session. Beyond that, you may or may not see me draw up something called a genogram -- a visual chart of your family of origin with information such as "how do the different members of the family each get along with one another?" and similar information. A genogram is something I will keep and use throughout therapy with you.
With 12+ years experience working with adults, couples, and families, I've honed my ability to assess both the obvious issues my clients are facing, but also a deeper sense of the 'problem behind the problem.' I routinely have gotten feedback from clients throughout my career that I have a knack for assessing and communicating what someone is dealing with both on the surface level and on the deeper level of a person's self-identity (also known as self-image or self-esteem). When I am able to accurately assess what is going on, I can usually tell I have gotten the assessment right, as my client will let me know by stating something akin to "things make so much more sense now with this different perspective."
I really like working with individual adults who are dealing with a relationship concern, problem at work, or have some personal or internal challenge they are trying to deal with, such as a low sense of self, a depressed mood, a lack of motivation, or some other feature that is getting in the way of feeling happy and secure. At this time, I prefer to not see couples in an online/remote therapy format. However, I am available for individual therapy for adults.

I identify as
Family Therapy
I practice using a myriad of models, including ACT, EFT, CBT, and restoration therapy (a family therapy model), but the primary techniques I lean on come from the contextual family therapy approach. Due to this background of mine, I often bring a unique focus to the work with my clients around issues pertaining to identity and trustworthiness in relationships, and how our beliefs about these two things propel our automatic action(s) in everyday life.

I've attempted to start therapy on multiple occasions but like many things getting started was the hardest part. Now that I've finally gotten started I don't know why it seemed so hard. Josh was easy to talk to and left a very good first impression. Looking forward to our next session.

For my first session I felt comfortable and confident to share how I was feeling. I ended my session feeling optimistic and with options to be able to tackle my situations on a daily basis.

!st therapy session in my life and with Josh. At lot was said, and the thinking gears were on. I think that with more conversation, more progress would be had!
