Catherine Udofia
I am a board-certified Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner with over a decade of experience providing mental health care in community, primary care, and specialty settings. My practice combines evidence-based treatment with a compassionate, personalized approach, ensuring every client feels heard and supported.
My goal is to empower clients to gain clarity, stability, and confidence in managing their mental health so they can strengthen relationships, improve daily functioning, and create meaningful change in their lives.
I bring particular expertise in community mental health, serious mental illness (such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder), addiction recovery, geriatric mental health, and other special populations needing care. I also specialiize in treating depressive and anxiety disorders. My goal is to empower clients to gain clarity, stability, and confidence in managing their mental health so they can strengthen relationships, improve daily functioning, and create meaningful change in their lives.
First session
In our first session, I’ll take time to get to know you through a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. This includes discussing your current concerns, past history, and goals for treatment so I can fully understand your needs. From there, we’ll review treatment options together, which may include therapy, medication, or a combination of both. My goal is to ensure you leave that first appointment with a clear plan, a sense of direction, and the reassurance that you have a partner walking with you on your journey to better mental health.
Strengths
One of my greatest strengths is the depth of experience I bring, with over a decade as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner and nearly ten years dedicated to treating serious mental illness in the community. I have worked extensively to help individuals remain stable, avoid repeated hospitalizations, and navigate the court system in ways that support their mental health and overall quality of life. My background also includes treating patients during inpatient hospitalization, experiencing depression, anxiety, providing care for co-occurring mental illness and substance use disorders, and delivering medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to support recovery. In addition, I have taught and mentored future nurses, reflecting my commitment to advancing the profession and strengthening mental health care delivery. My approach is shaped by years of working with diverse populations, including older adults, always tailoring care to meet unique needs. Beyond clinical practice, I engage in advocacy efforts at the state level to address behavioral health needs, and I have served in oversight roles that allow me to ensure care remains comprehensive, equitable, and high quality. These combined experiences allow me to meet clients where they are and guide them toward meaningful, lasting change.
Ideal clients
My ideal clients are individuals who may feel weighed down by persistent challenges, whether that’s living with a serious mental illness like schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, working through addiction recovery, navigating the unique needs of aging, or healing from depression, anxiety and/or life stressors. Many of the people I work with are motivated to understand themselves better, improve daily functioning, and build stronger, healthier relationships. If you are looking for compassionate, evidence-based care and a provider who will partner with you to find clarity and stability, you’ll find that my practice is designed to support your growth and long-term wellbeing.
Treatment methods
Psychoeducation
In my practice as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, I frequently integrate psychoeducation as a core component of treatment. I use this method to enhance patient understanding of their diagnoses, medication regimens, and coping strategies. By providing clear, evidence-based information, I empower individuals to recognize the connection between symptoms, stressors, and behaviors, which promotes adherence and engagement in their care. I also adapt psychoeducation to diverse populations, including those in community psychiatry and integrated behavioral health settings. With individuals managing chronic mental illness, for example, I emphasize relapse prevention, medication literacy, and skill-building. With individuals facing addiction, I focus on educating them about the neurobiology of substance use, relapse triggers, and healthy coping mechanisms, which helps reduce stigma and strengthen motivation for recovery. Across settings, my approach focuses on improving insight, fostering resilience, and supporting long-term recovery.
