Hi there I'm an eclectic and strengths based therapist that is here to explore the deeper reasons why you think and behave the way that you do. I like to find and build upon your already existing resilience. I try my best to be collaborative with my clients - I want our sessions to be your time to focus on you. I tend towards a more reflective style and I can be more directive if you need that (within reason as therapists aren't supposed to be directive).

First session

I will have a million and one questions for you! But I will also hold space for any questions you'd like to ask me as well as making space to discuss whatever is important to you.

Strengths

I used to work as a professor so I can be very analytical during sessions. I also am not a blank slate therapist - I will try to have a balance of appropriate boundaries while still using my affect in order to be with you emotionally. I always have an arts/crafts option and fidgets available in my office for you to use. I also try to use humor appropriately to maintain a good working relationship with my clients.

Ideal clients

Someone who is ready to dive deep and understand why they act and think the way they do. Someone who is ready to make sustainable changes in order to feel better. They are not a danger to themselves or others and if they start to have an acute mental health crisis they are open to completing a higher level of care in order to feel better. Someone that isn't sexist, ableist, racist, and/or classist as well.

Treatment methods

Attachment-based

I was trained while in my fellowship at Yale to accurately assess and work with the various attachment styles. In our work together we will begin to understand the patterns your attachment styles have created in you and work to help you behave so much like someone with a secure attachment style that you begin to heal this part of yourself. Because of my attachment training I prioritize our rapport very highly. At the same time I believe what all attachment therapists do - rupture and repair is key for healing our attachments (and therefore our mental health overall). This means that I believe that in order for therapy to be truly helpful we must negotiate repairing at least one rupture together.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT)

I teach DBT skills whenever I have a client open to this work. Sometimes I need to refer clients to DBT IOP or outpatient groups too and then I'm happy to be their individual therapist to fit the model's expectations.

Exposure Response Prevention (ERP)

I find ERP to most helpful when we are working with the VA's free ERP app. Together we can work thru exposure work and conquering your fears using this app to help us stay organized and focused.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

There is only so much that medication and therapy can do without mindfulness being a key component to your wellness routine. Together we will explore different anchor activities to help you stay in the now and heal your body and mind.

Psychodynamic

Together we can explore the parts of yourself that you don't normally see by exploring your protective behaviors and your unconscious thoughts. This approach can be life changing and so supportive if our rapport is strong enough.
