Hi there! My name is Courtney Carlson and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family therapist. I have a background in working with a diverse range of clients (children, families, adults) in a variety of settings (school-based, outpatient, long term residential settings). Currently, I focus on providing individual therapy for transitional-aged youth (18-24) and adults. I believe therapy is something I do with clients, not to clients. I typically work with helping clients manage anxiety, depression, and stress symptoms by improving coping skills, processing life transitions, exploring childhood and current family dynamics, improving relationships and communication skills, and improving emotional regulation skills.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

I believe clients are the experts on themselves and their life. I utilize the first session to review informed consent and begin exploring your presenting concerns and background in order to form an accurate case conceptualization and begin to develop a personalized and relevant treatment plan.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

Clients have often remarked on my ability to help them feel comfortable and safe within session. As a therapist, I won't have all of the answers or make the hard stuff go away. However, I will offer unconditional positive regard and attunement to help support you in accessing your own wisdom and collaborate with you on how to make the hard stuff easier to sit with.

Describe the client(s) you are best positioned to serve.

Clients that I work with come to therapy due to feeling stuck in cognitive, emotional, and behavioral patterns that are no longer serving them. We work together to build awareness around these patterns, explore where they came from, and discover new perspectives

My treatment methods

Person-centered (Rogerian)

In my practice, I integrate person-centered treatment methods to prioritize the individuality of each client. By emphasizing empathy, active listening, and a non-judgmental approach, I create a safe space where clients feel heard and understood. This method allows me to tailor interventions based on client's unique experiences, preferences, and goal, fostering a collaborative therapeutic relationship.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I utilize CBT to help clients identify and challenge negative thoughts patterns that impact their emotions and behaviors. I work collaboratively with clients to develop healthier thinking habits, improve coping skills, and change unhelpful behaviors. I incorporate practices like cognitive restructuring, behavioral activation, and mindfulness strategies to empower clients to manage stress, anxiety, and other challenges.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT)

I apply DBT skills in my practice to support clients in managing intense emotions, improving interpersonal relationships, and cultivating mindfulness. I guide clients in learning essential skills such as emotional regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and mindfulness practices. I take a collaborative approach, helping clients develop practical tools for navigating life's challenges and building resilience.
