New to Grow
Hi, my name is Amelda Rector and I am a Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LPCC) based in Kentucky. I received my Masters from the University of the Cumberlands and I have been practicing for 7 years in both Scotland and the US. I have experience working with clients in addiction recovery, school settings, in-home family services, Trauma such as sexual abuse and PTSD and I server clients from all ages.
In our first session together, here's what you can expect
In our first session together, we will start with brief introductions (trust me you will get used to my Scottish accent). I use this time to identify your needs, wants and expectations and then we dive into your life challenges. This will help me create a tailored plan for us to work through in follow-up sessions.
The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions
Drawing on my own life experiences gives me a unique and empathetic perspective on the challenges of my clients. My passion for helping people is only surpassed by my non- judgmental approach to resolving the problems of others.
The clients I'm best positioned to serve
I work with a wide range of clients from adults and children (as young as 4 years old) struggling to adjust to ever changing life challenges. I have extensive experience serving clients in addiction recovery. I focus sessions on teaching clients coping skills they can utilize during challenging times.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I have worked in many mental health settings from substance use treatment facilities, schools, adult counseling, and residential facilities. I found CBT to be the most effective treatment for a wide range of issues from depression, anxiety, substance use, phobias, and marital problems. In my sessions we explore how thinking affects emotions and how emotions affect behavior. Learning skills on how to catch, challenge and change unhelpful thinking can influence emotions and change unwanted behavior.
Motivational Interviewing
MI is a collaborative evidenced-based approach which focuses on client autonomy, acceptance, adaptation, empathy, and evocation. MI complements CBT since both help clients realize that they have the power to change their own destiny.
