New to Grow
I am a LCSW in the State of Indiana (Lic. # ). I have been practicing for 40+ years. I specialize in work with the elderly; individuals who have a combination of behavioral and physical health issues; and with grief issues. I have worked in both clinic and private practice settings. I use a variety of approaches, including strength-based therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, EMDR, and hypnosis.
In our first session together, here's what you can expect
During the first session I like to learn about the client's history, their current concerns, and their perception of their strengths. What are they hoping to gain from therapy? Is there something small that can be helpful to them during the first session? I am known for a gentle approach but am driven to help individuals grow in their understanding of themselves and their mental health.
The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions
In addition to my therapy training and experience, I have spent years providing supervision and management. This included starting and leading a federal qualified health center which integrated behavioral health and primary care services; and managing the Solutions Training Institute which sponsored more than 90 major training events with nationally noted speakers. My background has added to my strengths as a good problem solver, and deep experience with integrating primary care issues with mental health issues.
The clients I'm best positioned to serve
I tend to work with clients who are dealing with issues of aging and/or health concerns. I work with adults and couples.
Strength-Based
What strengths and successes has the client had in life? Can these strengths be applied in to resolve problems causing stress and depression?
Acceptance and commitment (ACT)
ACT involves accepting that negative thoughts and experiences exist and can then be reframed. There is an emphasis on flexibility and the use of mindfulness to enhance commitment and behavior change. ACT is similar to Buddhist psychotherapy.
EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy is used primarily to treat trauma memories. I have been trained and certified in this approach.
Hypnotherapy
Hypnosis is of value in helping people become calmer and in building new behaviors. I have gone through a three week intensive training on hypnosis with Michael Yapko PhD, followed by a supervision oeriod. I can use this modality when appropriate.
