Greetings! My name's Bertrona Freeman and I am a compassionate and practical therapist who supports adults navigating substance use concerns, anger, grief, trauma, emotional regulation, relationships stress, and major life transitions. My approach is grounded in helping clients feel heard, understood, and empowered while also encouraging accountability, self-awareness, and meaningful change. I enjoy working with individuals who are ready to better understand their patterns, strengthen coping skills, improve decision-making, and build healthier relationships with themselves and others. I have experience engaging clients individually and in group settings, using psychoeducation, skill-building, and relatable discussions to help clients connect what they learn in therapy to real-life situations. I believe therapy should be both supportive and useful, offering clients a safe space to process painful experiences while also developing tools they can apply outside of session. Whether a client is working through grief, managing triggers, addressing aggressive behaviors, rebuilding after substance use, or learning to become more emotionally present in relationships, I strive to meet them with empathy, honesty, and respect. My goal is to help clients gain insight, increase emotional awareness, and create lasting changes that support healing, stability, and personal growth.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

In your first session with me, you can expect a welcoming, supportive, and judgement-free space where we begin getting to know one another and identifying what brought you to therapy. I understand that starting therapy can feel uncomfortable, especially when discussing personal experiences such as substance use, anger, grief, trauma, relationship stress, emotional struggles, or major life changes. My goal is to help you feel heard, respected, and understood while also beginning to explore the patterns, challenges, and goals that matter most to you. During our first meeting, I will ask questions about your current concerns, background, strengths, coping skills, support system, and what you hope to gain from therapy. We may als discuss any triggers, stressors, emotions, behaviors, or past experiences that are impacting your daily life, relationships, or decision-making. This session is not about judging you or expecting you to have everything figured out; it is about creating a clear starting point and building a therapeutic relationship based on trust, honesty, and collaboration. I will also explain my approach, answer any questions you may have, and discuss what future sessions may look like. Together, we will begin developing realistic goals that support healing, emotional awareness, accountability, healthier coping skills, and personal growth. You can expect me to be compassionate, practical, and honest, offering both support and guidance as we work toward meaningful change at a pace that feels safe and productive for you.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

One of the strengths I bring to sessions is my ability to create a space where clients feel supported, respected, and understood while also being encouraged to take honest steps toward change. I approach therapy with compassion, patience, and practical guidance, helping clients explore difficult experiences without feeling judged or dismissed. My work is especially grounded in helping clients connect their emotions, thoughts, behavior, and life experiences in a way that feels clear and useful. I bring experiences working with individuals navigating substance use concerns, anger, grief, trauma, emotional regulation, relationship stress, and major life transitions, and I understood that many clients need both emotional support and real-life tools they can use outside of session. My approach stands out because I aim to make therapy relatable, engaging, and meaningful rather than overwhelming or disconnected from everyday life. I use psychoeducation, skill-building, honest reflection, and collaborative goal-setting to help clients better understand their patterns, strengthening coping skills, improve communication, increase accountability, and build healthier relationships. I also value meeting clients where they are while helping them recognize their strengths and possibilities for growth. Whether we are working through painful memories, triggers, aggressive behaviors, grief, or relationship challenges, I strive to balance empathy with direction so clients leave sessions feeling heard, challenged in a healthy way, and more equipped to move forward.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

My experience with cognitive behavioral therapy allows me to help clients better understand the connection between their thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and life experiences. I use CBT to support individuals who are navigating substance use concerns, anger, grief, trauma, emotional regulation, relationship stress, and major life transitions. In sessions, I help clients identify unhelpful thinking patterns, recognize triggers, challenge cognitive distortions, and develop healthier ways of responding to stress, conflict, cravings, and emotional pain. My approach is practical, collaborative, and client-centered, meaning I work with clients to explore how their thoughts and behaviors may be impacting their choices, relationships, and overall well-being. I also focus on skill-building so clients can apply what they learn in therapy to real-life situations outside of session. Through CBT, I support clients in increasing self-awareness, improving emotional regulation, strengthening coping skills, building accountability, and creating more balanced perspectives. My goal is to make CBT relatable and useful by helping clients move from simply talking about problems to actively developing tools for meaningful and lasting change.

Motivational Interviewing

My experience with motivational interviewing allows me to support clients in exploring change in a way that feels respectful, empowering, and nonjudgmental. I understand that change can be difficult, especially when clients are struggling with substance use, grief, anger, trauma relationship stress, emotional regulation, or major life transitions. Through motivational interviewing, I help clients identify their own reasons for change, explore doubts about change, recognize personal strengths, and build confidence in their ability to make healthier choices. My approach is collaborative rather than forceful, meaning I do not shame or pressure clients into change. Instead, I work with them to better understand what matters to them, what may be keeping them stuck, and what steps feel realistic and meaningful. The approach is especially helpful for clients who may feel uncertain, resistant, overwhelmed, or discouraged because it allows them to move at a pace that supports honesty and self-awareness. By using open-ended questions, reflective listening, encouragement, and goal-focused conversations, I help clients increase motivation, strengthen accountability, and take practical steps toward healing, stability, and personal growth.

Christian Counseling

My experience with christian counseling allows me to support clients who desire to include their faith, spiritual beliefs, and relationship with God as part of their healing process . I understand that many clients draw strength, guidance, comfort, and hope from their faith, especially navigating substance use concerns, anger, grief, trauma, emotional regulation, relationship stress, and major life transitions. My approach is compassionate, respectful, and client-centered, meaning I meet clients where they are spiritually and emotionally without judgement or pressure. If desired and when appropriate, I help clients explore how their faith can support healthier coping skills, forgiveness, accountability, emotional healing, decision-making and personal growth. Christian counseling can be especially helpful for clients who are seeking meaning, restoration, peace, and direction while working through painful experiences or difficult patterns. I may incorporate faith-based reflection, prayer, scripture, values exploration, and spiritual encouragement based on the client's comfort level and goals. My goal is to create a safe space where clients can process real-life challenges while also strengthening their sense of purpose, hope, and connection to God as they work toward healing and lasting change.
