I'm Brett and I am originally from the Midwest but moved around, living in the Southwest and East Coast. I completed my doctorate training was at New Mexico State University, with postdoctoral fellowships in Rehabilitation Psychology at Johns Hopkins Hospital and MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital. Throughout my training I have worked with adults (18+ adults) who have medical/physical illness, insomnia, cognitive concerns, adjustment to injury, adjustment to progressive disease, recipients of transplants, addiction, LGBT+ concerns, and life transitions. I am currently an acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Psychologist in Illinois. I am licensed in Maryland and Illinois.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

In our first session, I will review your consent form and provide a space for those new to therapy to ask questions. My goal is to provide a space that feels safe and for me to understand what brings you to therapy. You can think of our first session as a "get to know you" session, and beginning to brainstorm goals that you want to accomplish in therapy.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

When clients and I have to say good bye, they have consistently told me that they felt safe, seen, heard, and that they are leaving feeling a better sense of who they are, than when they started. Every client has felt that my approach was individualized to them and their needs, allowing them to better understand the way they navigate their world.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

If you are new to therapy, or you have been in therapy before, I am here to meet you where you are at in the journey of getting to know yourself. We will work together to develop goals that help you define your life worth living. Even if you are not sure what you are looking for, let's talk about it, I just ask for clients to come to therapy with an open mind to the journey of discovering themselves. There will be bumps and hills to overcome, but do not give up on yourself, I am here to help guide you over those obstacles. Clients who are 18+ are the clients have been the focus of my training.

My treatment methods

Interpersonal

As a foundation, my initial viewing of client's concerns are through the multiple factors that play out in their life and how these factors influence the way they navigate their relationships with others.

Acceptance and commitment (ACT)

With Acceptance and commitment therapy, I apply components to help clients find a non-judgmental approach to understanding themselves, their thoughts, and their feelings.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-i)

Sleep is vital to our success and I have been trained to apply both structured and individualized treatment for insomnia.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

I integrate mindfulness-based therapy into multiple treatment styles (i.e., ACT and CBT-i) to help with experiences of anxiety and depression.

Motivational Interviewing

I utilized motivational interviewing (MI) in treatment to help those who are struggling with a change. I also apply MI in helping with adjustment to progressive conditions like multiple sclerosis (MS).
