Hi, I am a Licensed counselor practicing in Virginia. I graduated from Radford University with my Master of Science in Counseling Psychology in 1992, becoming licensed in 2002. Throughout my years of experience, the most important skill that I feel that I have been able to succeed in is listening to the individuals I work with. So often people do not feel heard, so it is important for people to not only feel heard but also that they are effectively communicating what they are feeling.
During the initial session, my intention is to get to know the individual as well as ensure that I understand exactly what it is that they expect out of therapy and what they want help in trying to accomplish. My position is to get to know the person and their needs.
I feel that one of the biggest strengths that I have as a profession is my desire to hear what others are saying as well as providing a positive and accepting environment for them to work towards their goals and the change in which they desire.

I have chosen an eclectic treatment approach to explain how I work with people. It is my belief that in order for a clinician to be effective, they need to meet the person where they are at. In doing so, they are more able to listen to and help that individual to move in a positive therapeutic direction but at a speed that works for them and not based on where the therapist thinks that they need to go and or be.
I prefer to work with people using a Rogerian or person-centered approach, which allows the individual to be their genuine self. In reality, an individual is their own expert on their lives, therefore, helping to guide them to finding their own solutions and ways to handle their own stressors and issues.
I believe in the importance of people being able to connect their thinking and thought patterns to how they act and how they respond to other people or situations in their lives. It is only by connecting our thoughts and actions that we can truly understand how we impact our own lives, including our success and happiness.
