Hello, this is Dr. Alton Carswell I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) who has worked with various groups and clients. If you are looking for a therapist who listens to you and acknowledges your unique perspective, you don't have to look any further. I have 16 years of experience working with singles, couples, military, LGBTQ, people of color, and undocumented immigrants from various countries. In addition to my hours spent working with varying communities, I have been highly involved as an alumnus of Antioch University in Los Angeles and as a recent doctoral graduate in media psychology at Fielding Graduate University in Santa Barbara. The types of clients I work with are Individuals, Couples, Families, Ages, Teens, Adults, Elders (65+), Groups, Bisexual Allied, Gay Allied, HIV / AIDS Allied, Lesbian Allied, Non-Binary Allied, Queer Allied, Racial Justice Allied, Transgender Allied, Ethnicity of Your Clients, Bi-racial, African-American, Asian-American, and Other Racial or Ethnic Background.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

The intake is a client's time to connect and build rapport with their therapist. They can use this time to inform me about their situation and goals. They can tell me about previous psychology experience, or if this is the first time you are meeting, we can discuss what you are seeking from therapy and how the therapy process can assist.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

Some of the strengths I bring as a provider are Affirmative Therapy, Cognitive behavioral therapy, Person-Centered therapy, and Narrative therapy. My specialties are in LGBTQIA affirmative studies, LGBTQIA mindfulness, Media psychology

Describe the client(s) you are best positioned to serve.

I enjoy working with clients that are action-oriented, I like to develop SMART goals with clients that allow for completion but also a reasonable self-regard for the barriers and negative thoughts that may prevent clients from achieving these goals initially.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I have been using this treatment method for the past 16 years. We will use CBT to explore how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors have influenced how you manage and make choices and decisions. From here we will work on challenging negative thoughts that no longer serve you and move towards completing your goals.

Person-centered (Rogerian)

I like to create a safe space for individuals to practice discussing difficult topics so that they can find their voice and utilize it in their situations and relationships.
