About me

Hello! My name is Kevin Tate, and I have been a professional counselor for 18 years working in community mental health, crisis response, university career services, academic college success coaching, training programs for future counselors, and private practice as a professional counselor. I have a bachelor's degree in psychology, a master's in mental health counseling, and a doctorate in counselor education from the University of Florida. My goal as a counselor is to shape our work around the needs, goals, and overall direction you want to take in your life. If you have very focused, concrete issues you want to address, we’ll use a solution-focused approach to create plans and strategies for focused change and growth. If you have more broad, complicated things to address, we can talk about finding a deeper purpose and meaning for your life that can serve as a foundation for more significant changes and complex challenges. No matter what you would like to talk about in counseling, we will capitalize on your strengths as a whole person to create the change you seek.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

During our first session, I will spend time getting to know you - specifically, I want to understand what motivated you to seek out counseling and why it is important for you to work on it right now. If possible, we will begin talking about your goals. At the least, my goal is to better understand what brought you to counseling, and what your strengths are that we can build on in working toward your goals.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

I believe that I am able to balance moving from big picture, philosophical conversations to concrete goals and plans in way that helps you to both better understand yourself and your situation as well as lay a path toward who and where you want to be when our work is done. I also have a sense of humor that is important to me both personally and professionally, and believe it can be helpful when facing very difficult and sometimes overwhelming situations.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

I enjoy working with clients who are at a place of transition or change that has become complex and difficult to figure out, and working with them to first make sense of the situation and then move toward navigating that change towards and outcome that is both workable and is aligned with their values. I also enjoy working with clients who have a sense of humor, as that humor can be a strong source of perspective and coping during difficult times. Finally, I simply enjoy working with people who are motivated to find peace, meaning, and a path toward growth - becoming who they want to and are meant to be.
