Hi im Greg Kirkham! Im a licensed therapist, practicing for over 21 years. I specialize in treating trauma. Now, you may be saying “but I don’t have trauma!” Trauma comes in all shapes and sizes and is often not recognized as such, but almost always has a significant impact on someone’s overall mental, physical and emotional health. Trauma also presents in many different forms, including struggles with depression, anxiety and anger management. Over my career I have worked with an array of populations, including children/families, juvenile sex offenders, and even convicts. Currently, I serve those who served us as a therapist with the VA in middle TN. Over the past seven years, I’ve seen evidence-based treatments work wonders with PTSD and trauma in our veterans. With GrowTherapy, I’m now able to provide these and other treatments to YOU! Whether you’re not real sure or highly motivated to get help, I’d love to discuss options and see if we’re a good fit! Thanks for reading and congratulations on taking the first step towards a healthier and more fulfilling life!

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

Often, in mental health, initial sessions are the most lengthy. I, on the other hand, use this session as a sort of "meet and greet" and to determine if the client and myself are a good match, something I believe is essential in affecting change. During the first session, we will discuss primary symptoms/issues, history of trauma and prior treatment. I will provide a description of the treatment options that I offer, determine your overall goals for therapy and discuss scheduling/frequency of sessions.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

My priority with clients is on building rapport. Most people are not going to want to discuss the worst parts of their lives with a stranger. I work hard to not feel like a stranger to all who begin treatment. You have to “feel to heal” and allowing yourself to feel and be vulnerable around someone you just don’t click with is difficult, to say the least. It’s one of my top 2 factors in affecting real change. The other is clients true motivation to improve their mental health. I generally will not accept a client who does not want to change or is being “forced.” I look at this as a waste of both time and energy for both.

My treatment methods

EMDR

I’ve been trained in EMDR for nearly 7 years. I love this treatment and have seen huge gains in only a few sessions! And even better, the progress is maintainable! It’s become my default treatment for almost every situation.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-i)

CBT-I examines the thoughts/behaviors that are often the primary factors leading to chronic insomnia. I've been able to use this treatment successfully with veteran's, as a supplement to trauma-focused therapy, in treating severe insomnia, often lasting for years. It is a relatively short-term treatment, with noticeable gains w/in only a couple weeks and the entire protocol lasting no more than 6-8 weeks.
