Hi! I'm Nancy Strong, a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California. I received my masters degree from the University of Oklahoma and have been practicing for approximately 25 years. I help children, teens and adults. My clients are eager to improve, but don't yet have the tools needed to make this goal a reality. They often feel stuck, overwhelmed and anxious about their future. Lets be honest - starting therapy can be empowering, confusing, or scary, all at the same time. I strive to create a safe and welcoming environment that allows clients to explore obstacles with concerns related to ADHD, PTSD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, anxiety, depression, anger and stress /self-care. I focus on helping clients develop assertive communication & boundaries with themselves and those around them that can help improve their quality of life.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In our first session together, we'll start with brief introductions, complete the paperwork and then discuss into the specific challenges you or your child are facing. This will help us to create a plan, set goals for us to work through in follow-up sessions.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

Having worked with children, families, and adults for the past 25 years, I've developed skills to assist you in achieving your goals. With children I utilize play, sand, and art therapy. Often children are unable to put into words what feelings or experiences they have.

My treatment methods

Acceptance and commitment (ACT)

I utilize a variety of therapeutic approaches, including Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT). This method equips my clients with practical tools to evaluate their circumstances, encouraging them to be proactive and committed participants in their lives. With experience in trauma-focused care, I work closely with children and their families to foster healing, and emotional well-being. If your child is struggling with trauma or emotional difficulties, I offer a safe and nurturing environment where they can find hope and recovery. Let’s work together to support your child toward a brighter future. Contact me today to learn more about how we can make a positive difference in your child’s life.

Trauma-Focused CBT

My experience began after the OK City bombing in 1995, which led me to extensive research in PTSD in children as a result of trauma and human violence that assists people to process traumatic experiences and heal from their effects. It's based on the understanding that trauma can impact a person's mental, emotional, and physical well-being. TF therapies can use different techniques, such as visualizing, talking, or thinking about the trauma, or changing unhelpful beliefs about it. They can also help people build trust, which can be disrupted by traumatic events

Attachment-based

Attachment-based therapy can be used to treat mood disorders, anxiety disorders, unresolved childhood trauma, and relationship issues. This approach aims to help people address and resolve past traumas and attachment wounds that stem from childhood. As an Attachment-based therapist I believe that these issues are at the root of common psychological issues and relationship problems

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I’ve been using CBT in my practice for the past 25 years. We’ll use CBT to recognize how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors influence each other. We’ll then use that knowledge to change your thinking patterns, which will help you lead a less anxious and stressed life so you can view challenging situations more clearly and the false stories your mind tells you. Then, together we’ll create a concrete plan that includes evidence-based techniques and work through it together until your symptoms are more manageable I Have found CBT to be especially helpful in treating depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or an eating disorder. Not everyone has a mental health condition. CBT can be an effective tool to help anyone learn how to better manage stressful life situations.

Play Therapy

I have extensive training in play therapy over the past 25 yrs. Play is important to children and play therapy can play be a window into a child's inner world, a lot can happen that is therapeutic as children can come to discover ways of thinking and behaving that help them flourish. Play therapy is helpful for children who are in distress for some reason, who display behavioral problems (ADHD, mood dysregulation, and oppositional defiant disorder) who have experienced a dramatic upset in their life, such as the death of a parent or parental divorce. Play therapy is considered helpful for children who have experienced physical, emotional, and sexual abuse or for those who have been bullied. I have experience working in daycare and the school setting to help children achieve their milestones by addressing their self-esteem, anxiety, depression as well as assisting them to reach their developmental milestones.
