About me

Hello, I have been a licensed counselor for over 20 years. I am trained in several therapies that work well with trauma and anxiety. Nothing I do will cure you or make everything go away. The therapies I use will lessen the intensity, allowing you to have more control of yourself when triggers pop up. People complete therapy feeling they have control over their emotions and their lives.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

There will be no jumping in!! In your first session, I will only ask about basic information, such as education level, family, what kind of hobbies you like, etcetera. There is no need to go into any major problems or traumatic events. It's preferred that you don't and that you just talk about this simple information so that you can see if you are comfortable talking to me, to see if I'm a good fit for you. If you are looking for EMDR, that process will not start until a complete history is done and other prep procedures are done to make sure you're in a good space to do it.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

My strengths include listening without judgment, an understanding of military and police culture, and a desire to see a successful end to treatment. I also have a background in substance abuse and spiritual abuse (also known as church hurt).

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

Clients who are ready to put their problems to rest. That may sound odd, but sometimes folks feel they deserve the pain they are going through. Therapy works much better when you are willing to even accept the thought of changing your perspective, changing your mind, and maybe, forgiving yourself. Suggestions will vary depending on client.

My treatment methods

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) is a method of taking a traumatic memory and "re-processing" it to a much tolerable level, effectively "desensitizing" the strength of the memory.

Eclectic

Eclectic is a fancy word for "a bunch of different stuff." Since I have been practicing for so long, I have experienced many styles. I find it helpful to include Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), which explores false thoughts you have developed about yourself, psychoeducation, which is pure information about how mental health works, focusing a lot on neuroplasticity, and, for those interested, I throw some Jesus into the mix- ONLY if invited.

From the very beginning, Kate created a safe, nonjudgmental space where I could begin to unpack everything I had been carrying for so long. Kate has been a lifeline during one of the hardest times in my life. I came in overwhelmed by trauma, PTSD, anxiety, and the pain of infidelity in my marriage. Kate’s compassion, insight, and guidance is helping me find clarity, healing, and peace. I’m so grateful for her support and highly recommend them to anyone struggling.
