LMFT, 9 years of experience
My name is Nancy Roberts and I’m a licensed MFT specializing in trauma, highly sensitive persons (HSPs), and attachment/relational issues. My style is integrative, based on a client’s needs and objectives; I weave in elements of DBT, mindfulness, somatic work, and attachment theories. I am also passionate about working with those who feel misunderstood by or disconnected from the mainstream neurotypical world.
Of course the first session may feel scary, but I'm here to guide you with active listening and validation! In our first therapy session, we will begin by reviewing informed consent, confidentiality, and important policies. My approach emphasizes open communication and your personal insights to create a compassionate and respectful therapeutic environment. I view you as an equal in the process, ensuring that your experiences guide our work without assumptions. I believe this structure is essential for fostering a supportive and effective therapeutic relationship.
As someone with lived experience in trauma, neurodivergence, and attachment wounds, I have enhanced empathy for anyone struggling to feel understood in this world. We all want to be seen, heard, and validated, and I have experienced, first-hand, the power of a corrective emotional experience through therapy and safe spaces. This experience has made me passionate about providing this space to others. Personally, I bring compassion, empathy, intutition, and gentle curiosity.
Do you feel emotions more deeply and profoundly than others around you? Does that impact your life significantly? Empathy and high sensitivity are wonderful qualities and they can also be overwhelming. You've found the right place to help channel these qualities to work for you. Clients also come to see me who have experienced difficult relationships based on early core relational wounds. You may be a people-pleaser and have difficulty setting limits and boundaries, for the sake of "keeping the peace."
Brainspotting is a gentle method to help clients access and process deep-seated trauma, emotional blocks, or performance issues by guiding the gaze to specific eye positions that correlate with unresolved experiences. Holding the focus on these "brainspots" while maintaining a safe and attuned presence, can facilitate deeper healing and emotional regulation.
Attachment work explores early relational experiences and how these shape current emotions, behaviors, and relationships. Creating a secure therapeutic alliance provides a corrective emotional experience that fosters safety and trust. Techniques like inner child work, emotional regulation strategies, and exploring attachment patterns can support clients in developing healthier relationships with themselves and others.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills are wonderful tools to help manage emotions, improve relationships, and build distress tolerance. The core DBT skills—mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness—can help navigate challenges, foster greater emotional resilience and stability, and minimize suffering.
Mindfulness helps increase awareness of thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations in the present moment without judgment, fostering greater emotional regulation and stress reduction. By practicing mindfulness, clients can develop healthier coping strategies, improve focus, and cultivate a sense of inner calm and self-compassion.
