LMFT, 6 years of experience
Frequently rebooked
Welcome! My name is Kalyn and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in North Carolina and South Carolina, with a Master of Science in Human Development from Virginia Tech. I have 6 years of experience working with individuals of various ages and diverse backgrounds on a range of issues, including relational problems, couples counseling, communication challenges, depression, anxiety, emotional regulation, and mood disorders. My approach is collaborative, person-centered, and strengths-based, always striving to understand and cater to the unique needs of each individual I work with. I use elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), family/systems therapy, and supportive therapy to create a welcoming and open environment. It is a space where you can freely explore your emotions, build up your strength, and work towards making the positive changes you aspire to achieve—all without any judgment.
First sessions tend to be about collecting information. We’ll discuss what brings you to therapy, examine your present issues, explore your personal history and identify your goals. I'll chat with you about how I approach therapy, giving you a feel for my style and how I structure therapy so you'll have a clear idea of what to expect.
I take a collaborative approach with my clients, recognizing that you are the expert in your own life and know yourself best. As a therapist, my primary strength lies in providing warm and empathetic support, helping you to explore your strengths and empowering you to face and triumph over life's obstacles with compassion and guidance.
If you're feeling stuck, lost, or overwhelmed by anxiety, depression, stress, challenges with emotional regulation, or issues in relationships, you're not alone—these are the most frequent concerns I address. Many clients know they want change and have goals, but lack the practical tools to get there. Together, we will develop the strategies and skills necessary to navigate these challenges and create a life with greater balance.
In supportive therapy, the priority is establishing a secure, trusting therapeutic alliance. I focus on being an encouraging and validating guide by actively listening and normalizing your experiences. I also help you gain perspective, provide praise, teach practical coping skills, and work to reframe problems and set clear behavioral goals.
CBT highlights how our thoughts shape our feelings and actions. I work collaboratively with patients to identify the underlying irrational thoughts fueling negative emotions and behaviors. By challenging these cognitive patterns, we can disrupt the negative cycle and create lasting positive change.
I believe in a collaborative, positive counseling model centered on establishing a positive mindset. We will work together to clearly identify your existing strengths and use them as the foundation for building your best qualities, leading to greater resilience and personal growth.
I help families understand themselves as an interconnected system, guiding each member to recognize their specific role and contribution to the overall family dynamic. This systemic perspective is also integrated into individual therapy, where we explore the various systems (family, work, community) influencing the person and how these parts mutually affect one another and the whole.
