About me

I am Monica Lyon, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who specializes in treating clients struggling with self-esteem, family conflict, grief, relationships, boundaries, and depression to name a few! I graduated from Ferris State with both my bachelor’s and master’s degree and I have over 5 years experience working with individuals and families with a vast array of trauma history and internal conflict. At this time, my practice does not provide crisis intervention or management of suicidal thoughts or ideation.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

In our first session together we will spend time getting to know each other and explore areas you’d like to focus on. I value the rapport building process greatly and want to make you feel as comfortable as possible so that we can create a tailored treatment plan that is exactly what you’re looking for.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

During the past 5 years I have worked with individuals and families with heavy trauma and high needs; these experiences have reinforced and strengthened my commitment to providing a safe, non-judgmental, and person-centered approach to the therapeutic process. I ensure a collaborative and empowering therapeutic alliance to encourage clients in taking an active role in their healing process, helping them feel respected and validated every step of the way.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

I love working with individuals and couples who are open and ready to dive deep into getting to know themselves better and start working on their goals!

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I have been using CBT techniques and strategies for over 5 years with adults, teens, and adolescents to support them in navigating maladaptive thought patterns, recognizing connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and challenging self doubt to support the change they wish to see in their lives.

Acceptance and commitment (ACT)

I use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help clients develop psychological flexibility and live more meaningful lives. I guide clients in identifying their core values and aligning their actions with what truly matters to them. Through mindfulness exercises and acceptance strategies, I help clients learn to observe and embrace difficult emotions or thoughts without judgment, rather than trying to eliminate or avoid them. We work on recognizing unhelpful patterns of avoidance or rigidity and shifting toward behaviors that support their goals and well-being. By fostering a commitment to value-driven actions, ACT empowers clients to face challenges with resilience and purpose.

Couples Counseling

I use couples therapy to help partners strengthen their connection, resolve conflicts, and build healthier communication patterns. I provide a safe, nonjudgmental space where both individuals can openly express their thoughts and feelings. Using evidence-based approaches, such as Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) or the Gottman Method, I guide couples in identifying negative interaction cycles and underlying emotional needs. Together, we work on improving conflict resolution skills, fostering empathy, and rebuilding trust. My goal is to help couples deepen their emotional bond, create shared goals, and develop tools to navigate future challenges effectively.

Family Therapy

I use family therapy to help families improve communication, resolve conflicts, and strengthen their relationships. I create a neutral and supportive environment where each family member feels heard and respected. Together, we identify patterns of interaction that may contribute to challenges and work collaboratively to develop healthier dynamics. Using evidence-based approaches, such as structural or solution-focused family therapy, I guide families in setting goals, addressing specific issues, and building skills like active listening, empathy, and problem-solving. My goal is to help families create a stronger foundation for mutual understanding and long-term harmony.

Grief Therapy

I use grief therapy to support clients as they navigate the complex emotions that come with loss. Through creating a safe, compassionate space where clients can openly express their feelings, whether it’s sadness, anger, guilt, or confusion. Together, we explore the unique impact of their loss, helping them make sense of their emotions and experiences. I incorporate evidence-based techniques, such as narrative therapy to help clients reframe their story of loss, psychoeducation, and mindfulness practices to foster emotional regulation. I also provide tools for coping with triggers and adjusting to life after loss, guiding clients toward finding meaning and rediscovering a sense of purpose in their lives.
