Hello! I’m Ignacio. I am a therapist (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) based in Monterey, California that really enjoys helping clients overcome life struggles. While English is my primary language, I also speak Spanish fluently I have worked with clients that have different life experiences including depression, anxiety, post traumatic stress, self-esteem issues, relationship problems, recovery from break-ups, identity issues, and other challenges. I am also welcoming to LGBTQIQ folx as an ally. I am bicultural (Mexican-American) and bilingual (Spanish). The clients I have served in the past have benefited from the way in which I do therapy and help them overcome the difficulties in their lives to help them live and enjoy life more. I use science-backed (EBT) methods to help my clients including CBT, MI, and Mindfulness.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

I invite you to reach out to see if you feel we would be a good match! I will ask a few questions to get a sense of what’s going on and to see how I can help you. If we are a good match, we will schedule a first meeting where I will give you information about my practice and ask you questions about why you are seeking therapy. I really want to understand your situation. At the end of the session, you will have and understand your plan for recovery from your symptoms.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

My clients take away a sense of empowerment from their sessions with me and move forward with their lives. I am affirming, warm, have lived life, and I am realistically optimistic. I am structured, goal-oriented, and focused on problem-solving. I am active in conversation with my clients, providing feedback. It's great to teach you coping skills and help you identify and use your strengths to help overcome your challenges.

Describe the client(s) you are best positioned to serve.

For folks that are stuck, feeling hopeless, feeling down, or overwhelmed, confused, and wanting to figure out a direction in life, I am here to help. If you are ready to change how you are living your life, I am here to help!

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Because thoughts (cognitive) influence what we do and how we think (behavior), sometimes thoughts can have a harmful effect on us. I use CBT to help my clients consider alternative explanations for what they are experiencing. I help with identifying the harmful thoughts (cognitive distortions) and try to find alternative thoughts or explanations that are real and positive or neutral.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

Mindfulness is a way of staying in the moment… the here-and-now. Leaving the past where it is at because it can make us feel sad, angry, anguished, etc. It’s also about leaving the future where it is at because it almost-always causes anxiety. It is a way of teaching you how to breathe, ground yourself, and “let go.”

Motivational Interviewing

I use Motivational Interviewing in different contexts, but primarily if we get “stuck” as it is a way that I ask questions to help you consider what changes you want to make, what barriers may be in the way, one step we could take in that direction, and what your life would look like if the change is made.
