New to Grow
Over the past eight years I have worked in private practice and higher education serving clients of a variety of ages and backgrounds. I hold a Masters of Science in Clinical Psychology as well as undergraduate degrees in Biology, Theater, and Philosophy. I have traveled extensively and learned much about interacting with others from different backgrounds and cultures. My primary life roles are as a father and husband. My self-care includes gardening, reading, and traditional hand tool woodworking.
We will begin with an introduction, and I will provide a brief overview of my approach to therapy. You will have the opportunity to share your reasons for seeking therapy, and we will discuss your goals and expectations. I will also ask about your personal history, current challenges, and any specific concerns you would like to address. This initial session is a collaborative process, and I will encourage you to ask any questions you may have. Together, we will outline a plan for future sessions and explore how we can work together to achieve your therapeutic objectives.
First and foremost I believe in a strong therapeutic relationship between myself and the client as this is the foundation for all growth in therapy. I listen without judgment and work with you on what is most important in your life to improve. It is a necessity to me that we connect and that you feel comfortable and able to trust in me to be alongside you on this journey.
I work well with clients who are ready to begin making changes in their life even if that means just better understanding their emotions and behaviors so they can be more informed about the choices they make in their life. I believe in the power of perspective and insight as fundamental tools in better understanding one's experiences and how this can directly impact a client's behaviors.
I have experience using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) as an approach that focuses on helping clients develop psychological flexibility and live a meaningful life aligned with their values. Over the years, I have utilized ACT to help treat anxiety, depression, and life adjustment concersn. I use ACT to help clients accept their thoughts and feelings, commit to making behavioral changes, and engage in actions that enrich their lives.
In our sessions I will help you understand how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are interconnected, especially in relation to your anxiety. We'll work together to identify and challenge negative thought patterns that contribute to your anxiety. Through a combination of cognitive restructuring and behavioral exercises, you'll learn practical skills to manage your anxiety symptoms effectively. By the end of our work, you'll have a toolkit of strategies to cope with anxiety and lead a more balanced, fulfilling life.
In our work together I will use a combination of different therapeutic techniques to create a treatment plan that best suits your individual needs and goals. This might include elements from various approaches, such as exploring past experiences, fostering self-awareness, or developing coping strategies. By tailoring our sessions to your unique situation, we can work together to address your concerns and achieve the changes you desire. This flexible approach ensures that you receive the most effective and personalized care possible.
During our time we can explore the deeper questions of life, such as the meaning of existence, the nature of freedom, and the role of responsibility in your life. We can work together to help you confront and understand the anxieties and uncertainties that arise from these existential challenges. By examining your life experiences and choices, you will develop a greater sense of self-awareness and purpose. This approach empowers you to make meaningful choices that align with your values and aspirations, leading to a more authentic and fulfilling life.
I have experience incorporating mindfulness-based therapy into my practice, which combines traditional therapeutic approaches with mindfulness and meditation techniques. This method is particularly effective in helping clients manage stress, anxiety, and depression. I use mindfulness practices, such as meditation, breathing exercises, and body awareness, to help clients cultivate a greater sense of present-moment awareness and emotional regulation. In my practice, I often integrate mindfulness-based techniques with other therapeutic approaches to create a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to each client's needs.
