Motivational Interviewing

The four key skills in motivational interviewing (MI), summarized by the acronym OARS, are Open-ended questions, Affirmations, Reflective listening, and Summaries. These core techniques are used to build rapport, encourage the client to explore their own reasons for change, and to resolve ambivalence by eliciting change talk and minimizing resistance.

The client is the expert on their own life and drives the therapeutic process. The therapist focuses on helping the client develop self-awareness and gain insight into their patterns and behaviors
