My name is Angela Mendez-Vanegas. I am a licensed marriage and family therapist in the state of Minnesota as well as a certified psychiatric rehabilitation practitioner. I have been a licensed therapist for over 10 years and I have worked in the mental health field for over 15 years. I have worked with various populations over the years with a primary focus on adults (18+). The bulk of my experience is working with individuals with different cultural backgrounds struggling with life experiences and adjustments.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In our first session, we will do introductions as well as discuss what brings you to the therapy space. This may include initial conversation on what you are hoping to gain as well as hoping to find in a therapist. This is a great space to determine therapy fit. I will ask you about the goals you are wanting to achieve and allow space for you to get to know me as your therapist as well.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

Working in the field for the past 10 years and as a provider of color, I have built experience in supporting clients meet the goals they set forth. I will continuously check in on your progress and tailor your goal plan to match the needs that arise in therapy.

My treatment methods

Culturally Sensitive Therapy

For many years I have worked with the BIPOC community in various therapeutic settings. This includes working with individuals with many different background and legal status. This experience has allowed me to be fully aware of intersectionality and how much that has an impact in our lives. You can fully expect that I would encourage you to share your experience in this and how it informs your values and ways of living.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I have experience working with individuals experiencing chronic anxiety and depression. Utilizing CBT has been helpful in supporting individuals feel a sense of empowerment in their ability to manage their mental health and responses to it.

Structural Family Therapy

Understanding family structure and patterns is crucial to addressing familial conflict. My approach takes into consideration how the whole family system functions and how to address family concerns that are brought into therapy. This may include utilizing family genograms to help understand family patterns and communication.

Solution Focused Brief Treatment

In my experience, no problem is too small to seek mental health support. If you have a need that is causing distress and would like to focus on that particular area I am available to provide support as needed.

Trauma Informed Care

Trauma is an experience that happens to us that may not be tied to a particular event. I provide psycho-education on how trauma impacts the body and discuss ways to cope to address triggers that may arise.
