LPC, 18 years of experience
Hi, I’m John Barnhart. As a Christian Counselor and a Texas Licensed Professional Counselor, I have 18 years of experience helping people find relief and discover permanent solutions to their life issues. I integrate Ego State Therapy, Polyvagal Informed Therapy and EMDR in addressing the needs of your mind, body and spirit. I may also utilize mindfulness meditations to help you cope and regulate any depression or anxiety. For relationship issues I utilize the above plus the Gottman Method which is excellent for both romantic and social relationships. No matter what your issue, I can support you with a safe and compassionate space that is free from judgment. Together we will discover usable insights and coping tools developed through scientific research. I look forward to walking beside you on this healing journey.
In our first session, we will briefly introduce ourselves and I will answer any questions you may have. I will ask you some basic questions about your current emotional state. At your discretion, you may tell your story or describe your struggles. I will accept what you tell me and validate your emotions and beliefs regarding your story. Next we will explore explanations as to why you are experiencing the struggles in your story. Together we will explore strategies to cope with the symptoms you may be experiencing from your struggles. Finally we will explore possible solutions to your struggles.
I remain calm and attuned which helps clients to regulate and attain calmness as well. I connect with my clients while maintaining professional boundaries. I see all of my clients as valuable and strive to help them see and believe in their value. I help clients move forward by helping them resolve the issues that are holding them back. I teach clients how to soothe themselves and manage daily stress. My therapy has structure and purpose to discover solutions for clients.
Recovering from my own childhood trauma with debilitating anxiety and depression, puts me in a position of compassion, discernment, wisdom, and knowledge that bolsters the education, training, and therapy experience i have received. I can embrace intense painful emotions with empathy and composure. It is safe to tell me your story no matter how violent or shameful it may be to you. I know what it is like to be in intense emotional pain, use unhealthy coping strategies, and ultimately resolve that pain.
Polyvagal Informed Therapy has been a game changer because of its concrete explanation of how anxiety and depression are rooted in neurological processes. I use Polyvagal Informed Therapy to teach clients about the autonomic nervous system and how it affects emotions and thinking. In addition, clients learn to regulate their autonomic nervous system thus regulate and manage their emotions.
EMDR is a good therapy for getting past trauma and other negative experiences that have hijacked the autonomic nervous system resulting in anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. I use EMDR to resolve traumatic/negative memories, and to replace negative self beliefs with positive self beliefs. Clients are prepared with skills to self regulate and develop internal resources to be able to process through traumatic/negative memories.

John has helped me in so many ways. I value him as my counselor and friend. He’s helped me untangle a lot of PTSD and I’m forever grateful. He helped heal a part of my spirit, and continues to do so.
