Hi my name is Amy, and I first want to acknowledge how difficult and scary it feels to begin the process of therapy, either for the first time or starting with a new therapist. I take very seriously the enormous strength that takes and I work very hard to ensure that you feel safe and heard as we begin the therapeutic relationship. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with 15 years of experience providing counseling in both inpatient and outpatient centers. I received my Master’s degree in counseling in 2008, from Webster University. I had the privilege of working in an inpatient eating disorder facility for five years and have continued that work in outpatient settings. I have a passion for connecting with teenagers, college students and career women to build a safe place with an adult where they can voice their feelings and experiences without fear of judgement. I also especially enjoy working with young adult women as they navigate their way through the process of beginning adulthood. I have experience with a variety of issues, including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and general women’s issue. I am especially passionate about working with CPTSD and PTSD. I have received training and supervision in working with trauma as it is a highly specialized field. Trauma survivors need validation, belief, compassion and acceptance first and foremost before a trusting relationship can be established. I have working with women exiting a toxic relationship, having endured narcissistic abuse and/or infidelity (betrayal trauma) which is many times misunderstood by well-intentioned people. My approach is warm, compassionate and highly empathetic as I work to establish a safe environment for healing to take place.

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

In our first session, I like to spend time providing a place of safety, validation and acceptance. It can be very anxiety provoking to meet a new therapist and begin talking about the challenges you are facing in your life. Once you feel safe and ready to open up, we will spend time diving into the specific challenges you're facing. This will help us to come up with goals that we will work on in our follow up sessions.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

My passion as a therapist is working with women on women’s issues as well as teenagers. I have extensive training working with trauma survivors, with a more specific focus on narcissistic abuse. I have enjoy building relationships focused on safety and acceptance.

I’ve been in therapy for 6 years. In that time, I’ve had one therapist; Amy. I’ve had over a thousand therapy sessions with one therapist, and can’t say that I’ve ever had a single session where I had a bad experience. I could talk for hours and wouldn’t run out of reasons why I am glad I have both Amy and therapy in my life. I labeled Amy as “warm and authentic”, both of which are excellent descriptors, but had the reviewing process allowed, I’d have picked them all, and made up my own too.

My treatment methods

Trauma-Focused CBT

I regularly use trauma-focused CBT to explore how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and prior experiences influence each other. I work from a bottom up approach utilizing somatic techniques to help regulate the nervous system.

Humanistic

I am very focused on the connection and relationship between this therapist and my clients. I find that the relationship with between client and therapist is crucial in providing safety to give the client a safe place where they are validated and accepted.

Mind-body approach

I am a believer in the correlation between our minds and our bodies. My experience is that our traumas and stories affect our bodies and our nervous system. I like to give out some somatic coping skills and work to address that trauma that becomes trapped in our bodies

Psychoeducation

I provide resources for education regarding helping people understand their symptoms as well as guidance regarding coping and somatic based skills.

Somatic

I provide resources, coping skills and referrals for somatic exercises to help regulate the nervous system.
